They cost more but are worth it. The ink from Sharpies *will* eventually kill your CD - only use CD-specific markers: TDK makes one called "CD Mark" (Got one right here :) I spoke to one of the bigwigs @ Mitsui and they actually confirmed this rumor. And as far as the coated ("labeled") or non coated discs go, that is true to a point with the lesser quality CDRs - coating allows the laser to read (reflect) better, where if the disc is really thin and almost transparent , the laser cannot read as well. But with the good brands (Kodak and Mitsui), coated or uncoated really doesn't make a difference. Another thing about janky media is sometimes it will play fine for a while, but you cannot make a copy of the disc (read errors on your computer, or corrupt data) - so you end up being stuck with the janky disc. AVOID JANKY GENERIC MEDIA AT ALL COSTS!! Cheaper is not better! I would definitely also steer away from Memorex brand media - especially the 80 min. ones. I have seem more problems with those than any other media. Other consumer CDR brands are not *terrible*, just make sure it's a fairly reputable company (TDK, Verbatim, etc.), and make sure all tracks can be read by all CD players you have, and the disc can be re-burned with no read errors or problems. Also, in general with all brands, Gold-bottomed discs are better and last about twice as long as Silver bottomed discs (100 years vs. 50) Also, keep your CDRs out of the direct sun, and on a long term basis, CD-wallets can eventually scratch your discs because CDRs scratch much easier than commercially reproduced CDs. Gold CDRs will last MUCH longer than the blue ones. However, if you end up buying cheap gold ones that have a high failure rate then you're screwed again.
