But most these tangents came about because of an Orb-related discussion, so I submit that it shouldn't be too difficult (and should be a good policy) to frequently bring the subject back to some kind of Orb relevance. For example, the thread on art ownership may have been OT philsophical ranting, but such philosophical debates among music industry execs have very real repercussions when they decide whether Napster or even the OAA comes under fire. And it also concerns LX's ability to reissue his own material, which is something near and dear to our hearts ... I'm all for intellectual banter, and overall this is the most pleasant group I've come across ... but, indeed, this is a forum and not a soapbox. - -=Seofon _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 21:36:25 EDT From: NYCnoises@aol.com Subject: Re: (orb) new releases In a message dated 6/26/01 6:52:49 PM Eastern Daylight Time, dp.kelly@home.com writes: << are there any web sites that show new releases and up and coming? possibly >> In a message dated 6/26/01 6:52:49 PM Eastern Daylight Time, dp.kelly@home.com writes: << are there any web sites that show new releases and up and coming? possibly >> this is my favorite for general releases: www.icemagazine.com for current dance/trance/techno/house releases with loads of mp3 samples try http://www.juno.co.uk/ and http://www.dance-music-reviews.com ( no mp3 ) -- - - -- - - -Chris in NYC - - --- ------ - # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 11:18:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Joseph Hannah Subject: (orb) Greg Hunter inf: new album spcl ded. Of course, the site *still* runs like crap on my 32 meg P133 at work, but hey, everyone has the latest processor and lots of bandwidth, right? :/ The thing that really blows though is that overseas subscriptions are actually *more* expensive than ordering each month's releases separately. :( The fact that BadOrb is selling mp3 subscriptions should engender some more "interesting" debates, especially since the mp3s are going to be available a month before the vinyl...but it would be nice if we knew the bitrate, etc. before subscribing. DnB irritates me because it's so obnoxiously repetetetive and has very little content other than the beat. It's just too minimal for me to enjoy. If I wanted that I'd hack a loop up on my computer and just let it play all day long, but I don't consider much of the DnB music to be anything terribly musical. And besides, it's too easy to mix DnB. I'd be much more impressed if you could mix Alice Coltrane, for instance. But when the bloody record goes right out and says "I'm done at 140bpm straight through and you don't have to worry about crossing melodies or syncopations." then it just takes all the fun out, IMNSHO. Gabber just drives me nuts. I can't understand anything at 250bpm. Great web design triumphs again... As if the geniuses at netscape (or mozilla for that matter) have done anything but release crappy, bug-infested software since version three was updated. And while, as a web designer, I test everything in both browsers, It is still my philosophy to get it to work in Netscape (as opposed to fine tuning a design that looks EXACTLY the same in both browsers) -- because, as I have been known to put it, "Netscape users are used to seeing the web look like sh*t" However, this only goes for windows users, since the Mac has some pretty good alternatives beside NN and IE. : visual artist : web producer : www.thezenlab.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 17:15:11 -0400 From: "Meredith, Justin" Subject: RE: (orb) Tonight at the Anchorage.. Eat Static does some *very* nice DnB, closer in line to Photek with more melody rather than Aphrodite style. I'm rather disappointed with "Crash and Burn" though. If you know your pedigrees, you know that the two founding members of Eat Static, Merv Pepler and Joie Hinton were both members of Ozric Tentacles, legendary jam band of yore (and the now-defunct free festivals in the English countryside). Listen to "Erpland" and you'll hear Merv accomplishing DnB style drum patterns, not only with a live drum kit (rather than with programming), but also in 1991, about two years before anything resembling DnB began to take hold. BTW, I know the Ozrics still exist. Every other album is classic, though (Listened to Waterfall Cities nonstop for a while, but the most recent one is kinda, eh.)
