In August I start my new counseling career fulltime doing school counseling (middle school level) at a Dallas private school and adult counseling part-time through a Dallas agency. I do enjoy working with kids, but my past two years’ experience working with adult issues has convinced me that that is where my heart is. That’s what my life speaks, in the words of Parker Palmer. The school counseling I’ve done the past two years and will be doing this coming year is entirely behavioral/social (as opposed to testing/academic/etc.) The testing/academic side of counseling is important stuff but it doesn’t appeal to me at all. Unfortunately, what I hear from counselor buds who work in schools is that they have very little time to actually work with the kids, what with all the paper work, testing, and meetings they have to attend. This appears to be a widespread frustration, at least in Texas. Like yourself, I want to get in the classroom and do class meetings (and teach the teachers to do class meetings), work with the kids in small groups (I’ve done small group counseling these past two years for children of divorced families), and one-on-one counseling. I’ll also be doing counseling for their parents and most likely parenting classes. Tons of room for PD applications in all that. I anticipate loving my job next year but I know that what I will love the most is the work with adults, both the parenting work with the students’ parents and the agency work. In a year, I will have my full license (LPC), after which I will get into private practice, even though I may stay with the school on a part-time basis (I do like working with kids, it will help me grow my client base, and there’s that insurance thing I always need to be thinking about). I hope that information helps, Lea Anne. Best wishes for whatever direction you take.
