I was standing and looking at the wall that was covered in cast photos and semi-loudly complained about how Pierce had just as many (3) pics up as Kyle did, who deserved more. He was standing next to me and said, "But there are three of Kyle up there" and I was like "But that's not enough." I'm sure he got a good laugh out of that. I officially met him after the auction that I won Kyle's cowboy shirt in and I told him that I was one of the few "original" Roswell fans-as in I've been a fan since October of 1998 when the first book originally came out. He was impressed and commented on how there weren't many of us that could claim that. We talked for a few minutes about how much alike Nick Wechsler and Bill Sadler are and how when they met for the first time, they were both a little shocked at how easily they could pass for father and son. Kevin is a really awesome guy and he is so in tune with the fans, will do whatever he can to make us all happy. Jason Katims is a little more on the quiet side...at least he was at the party. I thanked him for making my favorite books "reality" and he looked incredibly flattered. A couple of girls came up to our group and we started in on the "we need more Kyle" thing and he totally agreed and said that they were working on including him more. I got his autograph and it became a running joke at the Valentines dinner that his name is really Jar Kat since that's what it looks like he signed. That's about it for those two. Not many people did. I did however see him on Friday when they were filming a scene in front of the UFO Center and I've heard stories of what went on later that night after I had to leave. As for Jason at the party, he never came out in the crowd...my guess is because the week before, he had had problems with a stalker trying to get into his trailer so security on him was tight. He did come out towards the end on stage and thanked everyone for their support and all. And then he came back out with the cast and was one of the last to talk. After Brendan's...um...display...Jason joked that "Well, I'm not talented enough to speak out of this ass (points to his butt) so I'll just have to use this one (points to his head)." He thanked everyone again and then I think it was when Kevin Kelly Brown had the mic, he's just standing there looking all innocent while holding his jacket open and pulling his jeans down enough to show off a good 4 inches or so of his cotton gray underwear...which sent Dreamgirls everywhere cheering....he slid them back up most of the way, an inch or so still showing and left them like that, striking a pose for the crowd to take pics. He is such a big kid. :) But, that's about all of the Jason stories that I experienced. -Kris who's up next?? This is my first post to the list, so I thought I'd introduce myself first. I'm a 48 year old psychotherapist and lecturer on the psychology of aesthetics - and mad keen on good telly! I've been a Lois & Clark fan since the series started in 1992, and pretty active on the internet list for that series; and as well as Roswell High, I'm currently enthusiastic about a New Zealand made tv series called 'The Tribe', a really interesting series that looks at how we might manage if we had to 'start again' after a disaster. Just as in Roswell High and Lois & Clark, The Tribe manages a careful balance between fantasy adventure and the exploration of relationships: 'outsiders' and 'insiders' have to work out how they feel about each other, and how behaviour needs to be conditioned by more than just expediency. I give lectures at the Tate Galleries in London - just last week I did one on 'The Artist as SuperHero', talking about the Superman myth in relation to work by contemporary women artists - talking about how the gender of the hunter gatherer role has changed in recent years. My 'news' about Roswell? My video dealer (www.BlackStar.co.uk) tell me that they've heard on the grapevine that Roswell *is* going to be released on video, but they don't have a date yet. Does anyone on the list have any better information than that? Mike said, >I hope you're getting Roswell at a decent hour >over there, as I understand all our favorite WB shows air at horrible times >overseas. We got the first season on Sky (satellite and cable only, owned by Murdoch, the man who owns Fox) at 8pm on a Thursday evening. I missed the first couple of episodes because the clips they used to publicise the show didn't do it any favours - but I quickly got hooked once I'd tried it. What's surprised me since the series finished its run a while ago - when I started reading Melinda Metz's books - is how far the show's writers have taken the story line from hers. She's far more brutal with the villains, and allows Max and Liz's relationship to travel through some pretty difficult waters too. I think the biggest shock, though, was the freedom with which she introduces 'extra' aliens - and then kills them off! In the tv show Amy is an intruder, a threat to the stability of established relationships - but I'm not expecting to see her getting blasted away at the beginning of the next series, are you? Kellygirl said that you hadn't had any overseas subscribers yet. I think Roswell's taken off pretty well here in the UK - I don't have any very strong evidence, but the shops who sell sci-fi goodies are all busy trying to find Roswell things to stock. A staff member in the nice one in Sheffield (where I live, in the centre of England) commented, when he saw my (bought on the internet from Power Star in NJ) Roswell t-shirt that I was risking my life wearing it in the shop - he knew several customers who'd happily kill me to get it! We don't have firm news yet that Sky are buying the new episodes, but I'm hoping that they're going to do their usual trick of repeating the first series first, so that I can get tapes made! I've bought Rites of Passage (my dvd player's chipped, so that I can watch discs from other regions, not just 'Europe') and quite enjoyed it - though judging by the hints in the director's commentary, it was nearly a much better film. It feels to me like the story doesn't quite come through clearly enough - it's a bit too buried in the moody pouting. The biggest disappointment was the turned-down sound track in the last of the 'deleted scenes' - Jason smiling was surprising enough, but actually singing, and looking as though he's enjoying himself? Wow! Has anyone seen Final Destination? Can you recommend it? Cheers, Colin. Well thats it by "Tess" joined the group with the episode CRAZY as the new girl in school. Isabel makes friends with her, and then weird things start to happen. This character has been a major source of angst for most fans. It's a love/hate thing: you either like her because she brings a new bit of drama to the show, or you hate her because she threatens to disrupt the dynamic already established. You can e-mail 'sales@tvmerch.com' or go to http://www.roswellstore.com. The company's called Power Star, and their postal address is 111 West Nicholson Road, Audubon, NJ 08106. They're *very* efficient and helpful, and I can recommend them highly. The web site is a bit rickety - takes a while to download, and is smothered with warnings that the ordering system might not work for AOL users and others - it rarely works for me. But if you wait for all the images to download - despite the 'Roswell' URL, you actually get fed through a multi-choice gateway that you can't shortcut by bookmarking - the choice of Roswell merchandise is good. There are two nice t-shirts with screen printed photos and one navy blue one (with matching sweatshirt) that pretends to be 'property of W Roswell High' - slightly odd, perhaps? They keep all the Metz books, and have mugs, photos, keyrings and lots of other bits and pieces. They also have a very handy e-mail service, letting you know that something new has come in. I would advise caution with the autographed photos: although I've been very pleased to have Jason's autograph here and there's no doubting its authenticity, its frame ('marbled' wood with golden bits and a 'brass' plaque) is horrendous and almost impossible to dismantle - and it cost a fortune to have posted. I looked at the new cover of TEEN PEOPLE Magazine and saw "TV sneak Peek-The best shows and hot new stars you'll love" and I look inside and see that Roswell is on the 1st page and there is a huge 2-side picture of the cast in the woods ( a very classy look). the article also talks about all of the 22,000 emails that were sent to keep Roswell on the air. Here's the article, enjoy: "Just like the little engine that could, Roswell comes steaming back, fueled by higher ratings on a new night and 4,000 or so bottles of Tobasco sauce mailed in to the WB as proof of its fans' devotion. (22,000 e-mails sent via TEEN PEOPLE helped on the renewal front too). That loyalty will be rewarded right away: In the 1st episode,"(the aliens) realize they're not alone in Roswell," says Jason Katims, who hints that an established character (but probably no one pictured here) will be in danger. So the game plan that's evolved -- "to hit the sci-fi harder that the romance" as Nick Weechsler puts it--won't change this fall. As for the Liz-Max-Tess triangle of destiny versus desire, don't expect easy answers. "Liz and Max are going to have to work through it," predicts Shiri,"Withoutknowing if they can make it." Look for 4 new characters too: one teen, 2 twentysomethings and 1 adult. Some will be human, some "Czechoslovakian," We don't know the exact ratio, but according to Jason , "If the 1st season was the exploration of Max's human side, the next will be the discovery of his alien side." ( The WB< MONDAYS at 9 p.m.) Tune into the best of the upcoming TV season. I happened to watch Destiny over the weekend, along with Max to the Max and Four Square. Oh, and the White Room. I'm glad you liked Destiny, but it still seems to me that they probably put this episode together rather hastily. With the quality of the last few shows that preceded it, I wonder if the White Room was actually supposed to be the season finale. I think it would have made a much better season finale (without the rescue), wondering all summer if Max was going to be tortured to death. Destiny just seemed to conveniently wrapped up -- like they really weren't certain if the show would be renewed or not (which they didn't know until basically the last minute). I won't spoiler space this since I don't know the answer, but I'd speculate they'll get back together after a couple of episodes... I doubt they'd change the chemistry between them TOO much... I actually had to debate whether or not to put the picture on my wall of Roswell magazine clippings. Eventually, I caved, because it was two full pages, and Nick was in it! It was just an unhappy moment. I mean, Colin should have been the one standing that close to Katherine, not Emilie. Speaking of the Hanks boy--where the hell were he and Brendan? They most definitely should have been in the cast picture, because they were on the show *way* before Emilie. But I guess they just couldn't make the photo shoot--kinda disappointing. So this has been a lotta rambling, but I was upset at having to have Tess in a Roswell photo. I meant to keep my wall Tess-free, but I guess I can't... Mike wrote about the White Room episode: > . . . it still seems to me that they probably put this episode together >rather >hastily. With the quality of the last few shows that preceded it, I wonder >if the White Room was actually supposed to be the season finale. I think it >would have made a much better season finale (without the rescue), wondering >all summer if Max was going to be tortured to death. One of the things that amazed me when I read the books was that this story happens to *Michael* there, not Max! The tv writers seem keen to keep Max as the 'leader' of the group, keeping Michael's character down a little, whereas the books concentrate more on suggesting a contrast in character. I can see that Brendan Fehr's personality might have influenced 'our' Michael, making him seem more laid back and taciturn than the more active and upbeat Michael in the books - but that might have been a calculated shift by the writing team, too. What *will* be interesting will be to see if the writers are bold enough to compromise Max's ability to lead, his hero-status, as the books do. Although it makes for challenging reading, it doesn't look like an obvious way to keep tv ratings up. The books are, as I think I said in the last post, pretty brutal at disposing of characters, so there's lots to anticipate in the new series - good and bad! Although I hope that the promise of 'more sci-fi' doesn't mean we'll lose the romance, I *would* like to see the 'auras' and 'dream-walking' from the books come to life on screen. The aromas might be a bit more difficult! >Anyway, I'm sure we're all waiting to find out more about Tess, and how Tess >and Max are going to get together, and how Tess will replace Liz. all the rotten tomatoes coming at me!!> Not from this direction, Mike! I'm intrigued by how they're going to handle it, too! It does surprise me, how we get stuck on the importance of tv couples sticking together regardless of the problems that come up, whereas in real life we'd (most of us) be pretty short with someone who advised us to stay in a relationship no matter what had gone wrong. Perhaps we like our tv characters to have 'perfect' relationships because we know we can't? Cheers, Colin. Today's 'Radio Times' (our tv guide) has arrived with great news: BBC2 is going to show the first series of Roswell High on Thursday evenings at 6pm, starting with the pilot next week. That means we get decent quality broadcasts on terrestrial (non-subscription) tv, which in turn means that there's a good chance of the programme developing the kind of popularity which Buffy (which used to have that spot) attracted. The only risk is that the BBC sometimes have a rather nannyish attitude to the content of programmes broadcast before the '9pm watershed'. They used to edit Lois & Clark episodes to the point of illogicality just to cut out hints of sex or violence. Let's hope Roswell High doesn't attract that sort of attention from them. Cheers, Colin. I think Max's ability to lead has already been slightly compromised even in the tv series. He's shown himself vulnerable to manipulation (Tess) and controlling Michael has been increasingly difficult. Even Isabel has questioned his leadership at times--"Toy House"--and pointed out that he doesn't have the right to make decisions for everyone else. And Liz, when she disagrees with Max, simply does what she thinks is best. Now, he certainly hasn't been as compromised as the book-Max, but I think the writers have to tarnish his halo a bit more to make his character 'grow' at all. I *would* like to see > the 'auras' and > 'dream-walking' from the books come to life on > screen. The aromas might be > a bit more difficult! I'd love to see the auras too. The connections in the book are fabulous, and I wish we had more of that Us Six Against the World feeling in the tv series. Even at the end of season one, I felt the connections between them all (as the group) were still too tenuous. We've never seen much bonding among the group outside the conventional couples. Where's the girls' night? Why doesn't the tv series offer up a guy-bonding? (In the books, Michael and Alex have the same disturbed sense of humor.) > Perhaps we like > our tv characters to have 'perfect' relationships > because we know we can't? We do get awfully attached to fictional characters don't we? I watched the season finale of another show last night--La Femme Nikita. It was almost the series finale, and before I found out that the fifth season is set, I was thoroughly upset by the finale. It just wasn't emotionally satisfying at all because the romantic pair was left all screwed up. I think for lots of people, it's the idea of surviving impossible odds that makes us so rabid on the idea of Max and Liz staying together, or Michael and Maria getting over their equally disfunctional upbringings and forming a healthy relationship. And we want to see Alex rewarded for his total devotion to Isabel, because haven't we all at some time had that kind of puppy-dog feeling for someone and weren't we crushed when it wasn't returned? The idea of Isabel not coming to realize what a fabulous guy Alex is drives people nuts. Anyway, very long post--apologies for any rambling. Everyone knows they'll get back together, so we're not even worrying about it. The fact about Tess is SHE'S A BITCH! She's manipulative, and she's blond, and she's short, and she talks funny. And I know Isabel's blond, Liz is short, and Michael talks funny, but Tess is the only one with all three of those qualities. And the way she kept interrupting Alex and Isabel moments almost made me throw something at the tv screen. Maybe it's more Emilie (who can't spell...) than Tess that I hate, but dammit! She should be offed! == ~Emily (but then you probably knew that...) "Some people are just pigs."~Liz Parker... (Stupid me, it took me a moment to realize that I needed QuickTime to view it). Anyhoo, sounds like Nasedo is saying to Max, "they're among you now." And later Max asking, "who is among us?" I guess it goes without saying that next season will be about all those people(?) receiving the signal, and finding out who they are and how the pod-squad fits in to all of it.
