I agree, and am not too worried about the 'M/L' relationship. I do worry about bringing more sci-fi to the show. Realistically speaking, sci-fi shows just don't do well on prime time television. The few sci-fi shows that did do well, such as Quantum Leap, did so because they show was very much about people and relationships (things people in general could relate to) and the sci-fi aspect of the show took a back seat to the rest of the story each week. What they've obviously done to boost the ratings, is to put shovel a lot more action in. Let's just hope they can keep a good reasonable balance of relationships, action, and sci-fi to keep the interest of all of us, and gain some viewership in the process... Nope. There's an alien named Adam held prisoner in a military compound, and then Michael's brother arrives, but we don't have any new female aliens. The only other female character (NOT alien) introduced is also in the military compound, and she and Michael get together for a while. But eventually she skips town.... Spoilers for the books' characters below, so don't scroll if you don't want to know . . . Mike asked, >Does anyone know if the Tess character is also introduced in the novels? If I'm remembering correctly - it's a month or so since I put the tenth novella down - there aren't *any* female siblings at all in the printed stories. But - again, my memory's not to be trusted - I think there were no less than THREE young men of Michael's and Max's age as well as several older surprises. There were *so* many that I lost track! The novels' pattern is to introduce an 'issue' - just the way an episode does - and then work it out through the book, but several of the novels begin a thread in one that becomes the focus of the next, and the second and third young men (Adam, who I guess Tess might be partly based on, because he plays a sexual and emotional pitch to Liz in competition to Max, just as Tess appears to be doing with Michael in competition with Maria; and Michael's twin brother Trevor) both make substantial contributions. The first young man is a hit and run lover for Isabel fairly early in the sequence. As I think I said in an earlier post, Metz is *much* more assertive with her sci-fi content, so characters (I won't say which ones!) get bumped off regularly and violently, and there's much more interest in the books than in the tv show (so far) in exploring the 'powers' of the alien group. The tv writers have shifted the focus towards presenting the group in a way that encourages to read 'alien' as 'outsider - feeling left out just like you do', and although that's there clearly enough in the books, it isn't as strong. For example, Michael's orphan upbringing in foster homes is handled more abruptly in the books, and he 'frees' himself - and finds an independent means of support - much more quickly than in the tv show. Brendan Fehr's presentation is much 'softer' than Michael in the books, much more human and emotional, and far less vigorous. Although the studious repetition of narrative strands in the books to make each of them capable of being read independently becomes pretty irritating by the end (the last couple of novellas felt a little as though they were almost spending more time checking you knew all the back story than telling the new one), on the whole I thought the books were *much* better than I'd expected - and intriguingly different from the direction and charactersations in the tv show, obviously in part because the casting choices have conditioned the way that several characters have been re-written. That affects Michael most obviously - the female characters are *much* more like the originals in the books, and Max is quite like his original as long as you can get past the book's insistence - clearly quite wrong - that he has blond hair! The exception I've noticed is that First Wave has vastly cranked up the sci-fi content for its second series. The first was strongly focused on the main character's emotional experience, and now he takes his shirt off in nearly every episode and there are lots more 'adventures' than before. The series has been buried in a dark corner of 'SciFi Channel' here - which means it's hardly watched by anyone, as most people only buy that channel as an extra strand in a cable or satellite subscription, and very little of the content justifies spending money on it - so I'm guessing that the buyers for the more important channels thought it would bomb. Has it been doing better in the States? Cheers, Colin. It's no 'War and Peace,' but it's very enjoyable. I wish the TV series could also do the auras, but I imagine that would get expensive. Curious that the TV characters are missing the siblings -- particularly Liz's. It could certainly add depth to the characters, but I only found Valenti is the most different from the TV series. I also didn't think Alex would be interested in Isabel in the books, as the television shooting scripts had him interested in Liz. I guess they decided to keep it the same in the end. Anyway, I'd recommend at least this book to anyone. I figure I'll read the rest of them in order and see how it goes from there. :) Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ryan Donovan Subject: [roswell] Sci-Fi Content- Why I'm Not Worried Date: 05 Sep 2000 20:08:43 -0700 (PDT) I'll try and be brief (I say that, and then I'm not, but bear with me...). Okay, the thing I tell myself to keep from waking up screaming in the middle of the night (about what I cutely named "The Sci-Fi Crises") is that the same people will be working on the show- actors, producers, directors, and most of all writers. I do know that a new guy is coming in who Jon (Riker) knows from DEEP SPACE NINE (I think he'll join the writing team), but even this does not worry me. The direction of the show *had* to change. I don't think (even though I partly do think this) that it would be enjoyable to watch pretty much the same thing we did last season. The show would get boring and unintresting. I will admit that I was disappointed by "Destiny"- we waited a year with the pod squad, only to have their whole purpose spurted out in under 5 minutes. Still, the show should be great this year. Relationships are still going to be dealt with, so I'm not worried. _____________________________________________________________ Email Powered by Everyone.net Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Mike Stone" Subject: RE: [roswell] Sci-fi content Date: 05 Sep 2000 22:07:51 -0500 > The exception I've noticed is that First Wave has vastly > cranked up the sci-fi content for its second series. > ... Has it been doing better in the States? I'm afraid I can't say I've heard of it, but will check it out. If it's on the sci-fi channel, I get it in my area. Oddly, I don't think most cable providers here offer that channel. (I like it, because I never miss a marathon of the Twilight Zone.) But it's part of the standard package. I think even should Roswell (Roswell High) doesn't make it past this season, it will probably live at the sci-fi channel at some point. I think they'll re-run shows even if it didn't make the typical 100 mark. Still, the WB loves audience attention and again, sci-fi shows tends to get special recognition from its fans (fan mail, etc.) Hopefully it'll have a full run this next season... If you do not want to be surprised as to the content of the novels, I'd suggest you stop reading this now. I really don't like surprises (well, I do... I just say that I don't) but I do like to get the facts straight before I rush into anything- even reading, so I hope this helps. Here's a brief run-down of characters from the novels, in case you do not have the time/energy/money to read/buy them: (I may spell some names wrong, but I'm trying to do this from memory) Nikolas - a teen alien who crashed with the pod squad originally. This character is very reminiscent of Tess, but instead of messing up the Max/Liz dynamic, he screws instead with Alex and Isabel. Isabel is extremely taken with him... I have no idea *why*. He's only in the one book, Isabel moons over him in the subsequent book, and he's briefly mentioned (though, not my name) in another towards the end. He's the most like Tess, in my opinion. Ray Iburg - Milton's character on the show, except the curator of the UFO museum turns out to be an alien himself. Ray's kind of like Nacedo, but an extremely watered-down, laid back, Elvis-loving version of him. The aliens don't really get the much of a chance to know him, as he dies rather early on in the series. Adam - *another* alien teen that crashed with the pod squad, Adam was the most complex and intresting character introduced in the series. He was raised in an underground compound by Valenti, only to believe himself the sheriff's son. Adam later escapes with Michael, who is taken to the same compund. He is later controlled by DuPris and subsequently killed by him. Adam had the most realistic death- the characters actually mourned him via a funeral sequence. Cameron - the only new major human character, Cameron was also in the underground compund with Michael and Adam. Valenti was using her to spy on Michael. The two eventually fall for each other, but their relationship is later compromised by the fact that Cameron lied. Later on, Cameron heroically saves *everyone* from DuPris, but skips town before Michael can thank her. Much in the same way Isabel was hung over Nikolas, I don't understand why Michael was so attracted to Cameron. Elsevan DuPris - the local owner of a tabloid alien magazine, DuPris was originally just a noisy journalist who bugged the characters for a few paragraphs in every story. In what was perhaps the biggest revelation of the series, it's found out the DuPris, himself, is an alien. A rogue who was determined to shatter the "Collective Consciousness" of Max, Michael, and Isabel's home planet, DuPris savagely attacks and toys with everyone. He kills Adam, only to be subsequently killed by Trevor. Trevor - the birth brother of Michael, Trevor arrives on Earth (I could tell you how, but it's not really relevant) from the home planet. He originally intends to be sincere, until he betrays everyone to DuPris. Trevor believed in DuPris's ideals, but he quickly finds that his hero isn't the man he thought he was. When he witnesses Adam's unnecessary death, Trevor kills DuPris in vengeance. The only survivor of the four new aliens introduced in the series, Trevor goes back to the home planet at the end of the last story. It's also implied that him and Isabel may have a future relationship before he leaves. I know several people on the mailing list enjoyed the novels, but I really didn't. I read them and id my best to get through them, but they really have *nothing* at all to do with the TV show. Most of the character's personalities are completely different. Michael is a perfect example. He's flippant and humorous in the books, but nothing like the rather pissy portrayal Brendon Fehr gives. Max is also much more withdrawn on TV than he is in the books. Some characters last names are different (Liz Parker = Liz Ortecho and Alex's is different) and other's hair is different (Max is a blond, Alex a redhead). Jim Valenti and Kyle are totally evil with no redeemable qualities. If your bored and you *really* love Roswell, so much that you can't wait for the next episode, then you may want to read the books. Personally, I found them a disappoint. So much thought goes into the television series- there doesn't seem to be that in the stories I read. Just when I could picture the characters I know and love in a situation I was reading, something in the book would be so off it would shatter that image completely. I would appreciate comments from both people who liked and disliked the book, particularly from the latter, as I have yet to find anyone who agrees with my perspective. This was really long. Thanks for sitting through it. I'm looking forward to what your opinion is. _____________________________________________________________ Email Powered by Everyone.net Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Peplik@aol.com Subject: Re: [roswell] Roswell Special Presentation Date: 06 Sep 2000 12:12:09 EDT Hey guys I was watching Angel last night and after it I saw ta commercial hat there will be a Special Presentation of Roswell tonight, wednesday. And why?] gosh, do i have to pick one? well my faves were Roswell Pilot and Toy House and The White Room. why? well, all three were strong vehicles for Max (his strenghts and weaknesses) all three were dramatic and for me jaw dropping and a tear shed here and there. all the characters, even the *minor ones* and the plot made me want more. >[What was your least favorite episode last season. And why? What would you >have like to have seen played out differently?] geez, this one is even harder to answer....now there are two of them Heat Wave and Destiny. Neither as a whole were awful, just parts of them could have been done a little differently. >[Do you feel the season was wrapped up too quickly in 'Destiny?'] Yes! it did. i am guessing that when they filmed Destiny they still were unsure if the WB was going to pick them up for season II. the confrontation/*in cahoots* of valenti and pierce, i think was *wrapped* up to quickly. i think a more dramatic and a good way to get everyone to watch season II first ep, would have been to have a cliffhanger . >[Do you think that Hank, Michael's foster father, 'got what he deserved' in >Independence Day?] well, this is a TV show and Nasedo is an alien. Michael's foster father was a horses rear and altho i don't think anyone *deserves* to be murdered.... well i have no love loss for that guy! >[Do you think we should see more of the character's parents in the next >season, as they suddenly took a back seat to other storylines last season?] yes i would like to see the parents again next season, but it doesn't seem likely since the characters are going to be trying to get *in touch* with thier alien roots. >[Do you like having Valenti as part of the 'gang' now? Why?] i really don't feel like Valenti is *part* of the gang , i still don't trust him. >[What roles do you think the Sheriff and Kyle could have next season, now >that they know their secret?] i hope we get to see more of kyle next season. i really do not have a clue as to what their roles will be, with their new knowledge... the plot scenerio could be that of so many. so next season is going to be of so much interest for me re: the Liz/Max/Tess relationship and how Valenti will play into the stories as a whole. >[Do you think Max and Liz are truly meant to be together, or that people >shouldn't date outside their own species?] i think that Liz and Max are meant to be together, maybe not forever and ever. but certainly there is some sort of *special* connection between the two.......and well.... i just CANNOT stand tess. >[Likewise, do you think that Michael and Maria stand a chance to get back >together?] i like the michael and maria relationship. i don't think they have that *specialness* of L/M, but they make an interesting couple . >[For you north American viewers, has the move from Wednesday to Monday >nights been better for you? And why?] The pilot was and is my favorite episode. It was why I watched every single week it was on. I was sold on the forbidden love story and the alien mystery. It was/is a great foundation for a story. The pilot was funny, scary, and thrilling all at the same time. [What was your least favorite episode last season. And why? What would you have like to have seen played out differently?] Leaving Normal left a little to be desired. I wish they had given us a little more history on Liz's Grandmother - she could have played a larger part of the story. Everything was too brief or just not enough to go on. [Do you feel the season was wrapped up too quickly in 'Destiny?'] Yes, I think Destiny was TOO MUCH INFO. They should of made it a two hour episode, but no they cram so much into one hour. I think the fans deserved better, but I guess I will take what I can get. I loved the tenderness Max showed to Liz - I will always believe they belong together. [Do you think that Hank, Michael's foster father, 'got what he deserved' in Independence Day?] Well, maybe. He was such a jerk. [Do you think we should see more of the character's parents in the next season, as they suddenly took a back seat to other storylines last season?] The characters are suppose to be teenagers. What kind of parents are they that let their children run around all hours of the night and never come home, never check in, etc.? Liz's dad was really kind of weird in Into the Woods. Like he was spying all the time and then in the next episode we don't even see the parents. What was that? We never see Liz's mom and then in Sexual Healing she was like crawling all over the place. I mean I really like the parents (DeLuca, Parkers and Evans) - I just wish there was a balance somewhere. [Do you like having Valenti as part of the 'gang' now? Why?] I would like Valenti to protect the 'gang' - that would be great. He can be instrumental in helping them gain access to information and the like. With the 'bad aliens' coming - I think the kids need help from somewhere and Nascedo is scary. [What roles do you think the Sheriff and Kyle could have next season, now that they know their secret?] I hope to see Kyle more - he is very good - and he should be more included in the story line. I think the Sheriff and Kyle should be a little more involved. Kyle could be trying to get with Tess and maybe move her away from the others. Tess and Nescedo scare me - they were really weird in Tess, Lies and Videotape - like they were really evil. [Do you think Max and Liz are truly meant to be together, or that people shouldn't date outside their own species?] Yes, I think they are soulmates. Max was engineered with human traits, so he is really part human. [Likewise, do you think that Michael and Maria stand a chance to get back together?] I love Michael and Maria (but not more than Max and Liz) - they are SO intense. Michael cannot figure out how to handle his feelings about Maria and she is really in love with him. They are funny and interesting together. I feel like the new season will not touch much on the relationship side of the aliens and humans and that will be a big disappointment for me. It played such a huge amount of the chemistry of the first season. I have hope though. [For you north American viewers, has the move from Wednesday to Monday nights been better for you? If you're overseas, is it shown at an inconvenient time for it to catch more viewers?] No, I just get home early on Monday instead of Wednesday. Monday became my Roswell day. Thanks for the thought provoking questions - they were fun. And why?] I'd say my favorite episode this past season was 'Independence Day.' No, it didn't delve much into the sci-fi aspects of the show, and no, it didn't highlight the Max/Liz relationship, but I thought it was just outstanding. I'm rather surprised that the crashdown.com has it rated at 8.70. Up until this episode, we'd had indications that Michael's personal life was pretty bad (i.e., in the Pilot where he states that his father just keeps him around for the checks). In this episode their family life was dealt with in a pretty realistic way, a bit painful, and certainly tugged at our hearts, as we felt for Michael and his personal hell that he had to live with day in and day out. It helped explain his behavior (although I've been a social worker in the past, perhaps Dr. Roth can shed some light on that for us as well?) patterns and his personality. He doesn't just keep people at a distance because of who he really is, but because of his bad experiences with people as he grew up. (Which is pretty sad, when you think about it.) It also showed, pretty realistically, how difficult it can be for the loved ones to cope with someone who has these kind of problems (whether it's abusive parents, or alcoholism, etc.) as Max and Isabel simply didn't know how deal with this problem. It made it clear why Michael was so much more desperate to find his 'real' father, as he told in 285 South and others. Fehr also impressed me as an actor as well. I don't know yet if he has a wide range of acting skills, but he's definitely made this role his own. I particularly enjoyed the twist at the end, not really figuring out that the Hank we saw in the last shots was in fact Nacedo. If you read the shooting-script for this episode, it states that Valenti eyes were to show his anger with Hank's lack of parental responsibility, which is why he said, "make it soon" when Hank stated he was leaving without Michael. Other than I.D., I truly enjoyed Toy House, also because of its familial storyline, as well as Blood Brother for its suspense. (Among all the rest.) > [What was your least favorite episode last season. And why? > What would you have like to have seen played out differently?] One of the weaker episodes, I felt, was Heat Wave and Sexual Healing. I felt Heat Wave was only saved by its wonderfully portrayed Alex/Isabel dream walking scene, and Sexual Healing just didn't flow well with the rest of the story. It was never quite apparent why everyone was getting hot and heavy with each other -- not to mention the lack of follow up by the parents. [Do you feel the season was wrapped up too quickly in 'Destiny?'] Yes, it seems the whole secret of the show was revealed, every bit of it handed to us in a couple of minutes. I can only hope that the show continues to feed off that storyline, while coming up with a new goal (which I guess we've all read about in the TV guide spoilers), and still do it well. I'm confident! :) [Do you think that Hank, Michael's foster father, 'got what he deserved' in Independence Day?] No, despite it all, he didn't deserve death. Still, as Kellygirl said, it is just a show, so no need to get too sappy about it. I'm curious if Michael will eventually find out about that? I figure probably not. > [Do you think we should see more of the character's parents > in the next season, as they suddenly took a back seat to > other storylines last season?] Well, it appears that the gang is going to be a bit more grown up next season, so I suspect not. And that may be a good thing, if they're trying to break a bit out of the mold they're in. It doesn't bother me either way. > [Do you like having Valenti as part of the 'gang' now? Why?] I'm not sure; he's always been NOT part of the gang, and it's hard to tell what purpose he could serve. If in fact we aren't going to see much of the parents, he could possibly take on the role of them, making sure they don't get caught by the FBI. I still suspect that the Sheriff and the pod-squad aren't going to be open books with either other either. > [Do you think Max and Liz are truly meant to be together, > or that people shouldn't date outside their own species?] That's a toughie (and what was I thinking?) - but I imagine Tess will keep her hold on Max. :) > [Likewise, do you think that Michael and Maria stand a > chance to get back together?] Man, I ask some tough questions. :) Seriously, I think it'll still be some time before Michael can have a 'normal' relationship. He still lacks some maturity and commitment that it takes. > [For you north American viewers, has the move from > Wednesday to Monday nights been better for you? > If you're overseas, is it shown at an > inconvenient time for it to catch more viewers?] I'm okay with it -- at least it's one good thing to look forward to on a Monday. ;) Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Chantel Reynolds Subject: RE: [roswell] RE: Date: 17 Sep 2000 17:45:30 -0700 (PDT) > > [What was your favorite episode last season. For sheer sci-fi stuff, 4Square--it was the first real glimpse of the alien mythology. > > > > [What was your least favorite episode last season. > And why? > > What would you have like to have seen played out > differently?] Toy House drove me nuts. I seem to be in the minority (at least on the boards), but it felt like Max was stuck in reverse and at his MOST controlling. > > > [Do you feel the season was wrapped up too quickly > in 'Destiny?'] A friend of mine thought the pacing in Destiny was perfect, but I have to say I think it went a tad too fast. There were so many unanswered questions! But it could be worse: Destiny really COULD have been the last episode, and then where would we be? > > > [Do you think that Hank, Michael's foster father, > 'got what he deserved' in > Independence Day?] I didn't mourn him, if that's what you're asking. :) But nobody deserves to be murdered. > > > > [Do you think we should see more of the > character's parents > > in the next season, as they suddenly took a back > seat to > > other storylines last season?] I think the parents are pretty much out of the picture, except for Amy DeLuca, and I think her presence is only out of deference to her status as Valenti's love interest. The Cutting Room floor site has the original script for Destiny, with the edited sections highlighted. There was a section about the parents and their panic over their missing children, and I wish they'd left that in. > > > > [Do you like having Valenti as part of the 'gang' > now? Why?] > In the season two promos, it is suggested that Nasedo dies, leaving the gang WITHOUT that level of protection from the government. I suspect Valenti will have to become the next best thing. I like Valenti as a confidant, because it shows the gang that they CAN trust an adult, which is an interesting subtext to a show about teenage alienation. > > > > [Do you think Max and Liz are truly meant to be > together, > > or that people shouldn't date outside their own > species?] I tend to distrust the soulmate stuff, but I'm a cynic much of the time. But I do think they have a special bond, and my teensy incurable romantic side wants to see that honored. > > > > [Likewise, do you think that Michael and Maria > stand a > > chance to get back together?] They have a *chance*, but wow, it's not going to be pretty! Maria has abandonment issues, not to mention her bizarre tendency to let Michael call all the shots. Michael is stuck on his 'destiny' right now, and I figure he'll try to force it. Plus he doesn't value Maria enough. > > > > [For you north American viewers, has the move from > > Wednesday to Monday nights been better for you? > > If you're overseas, is it shown at an > > inconvenient time for it to catch more viewers?] What else is there to watch on Monday? When it was Wed, it DID compete with other shows I liked, which left me frantically recording stuff. Now, I'm assured of 0 competition. Ah, what a lovely little survey. Thanks Mike. And why?] The Morning After. It was the first episode I ever saw (I missed the original airing of "Pilot") and it literally made me fall in love with the show- I especially remember how much I liked the opening credit sequence, and I'm pleased now to know it wasn't present in "Pilot". >[What was your least favorite episode last season. And why? What would you >have like to have seen played out differently?] Hmmm... I'm trying to think of an episode I didn't like. I would have to go with "Independence Day" because while I like the idea and character of Michael, Brendon Fehr's portrayal of the role is ghastly. Reviewing the season this summer, I find myself more apt to stomach Tess than Michael, which is just wrong. I don't think Mr. Fehr did a very good job in "Independence Day" even though others may think so. >[Do you feel the season was wrapped up too quickly in 'Destiny?'] No, like the creators and producers, I'll say that the needed to go through a natural evolution process. It definitely suited ROSWELL and made the last 6 episodes stand out as especially suspenseful. I didn't like the resoltion of "Destiny"- I think it was wrong to reveal so much in 10 minutes. >[Do you think that Hank, Michael's foster father, 'got what he deserved' in >Independence Day?] I guess so. I really didn't -and still don't- care what happens to Michael. >[Do you think we should see more of the character's parents in the next >season, as they suddenly took a back seat to other storylines last season?] I would like to see more of Amy DeLuca and Diane Evans, but the rest of the parents didn't really strike me as "watchable" week after week. Amy really was on of the best supporting characters- I hope they do stuff with her next season >[Do you like having Valenti as part of the 'gang' now? Why?] Yes, I do, because it eliminates him as their enemy. I think, in all honesty, that Valenti was so invested in the whole alien storyline that he needed to know. After he saved Max from Hubble, he kind of made the choice to become their ally. He was never malevolent- he simply wanted the truth. >[What roles do you think the Sheriff and Kyle could have next season, now >that they know their secret?] Valenti, I would assume, will become the kind of patriarchal father figure, similar to Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As an adult and a sheriff, he'll be able to do more in the ways or protecting them from potential human enemies. I don't think Kyle will be expanded too much- I don't think he's even supposed to appear in "Skin and Bones" >[Do you think Max and Liz are truly meant to be together, or that people >shouldn't date outside their own species?] I think Max and Liz should do what *they* want to do. If they want to date, then they should date. Period. >[Likewise, do you think that Michael and Maria stand a chance to get back >together?] I think Michael is too much of a jerk. Maria should find someone else who better suits her eccentric personality. >[For you north American viewers, has the move from Wednesday to Monday >nights been better for you? If you're overseas, is it shown at an >inconvenient time for it to catch more viewers?] Neither night is inconvenient, but personally I liked it better when it was on after "Dawson's Creek" on Wednesday night. I don't watch "Dawson's Creek" but I think it was just a better timeslot for the show. And why?] That's a hard question, because I really loved most of the episodes. Sorry if this is long! :) First of all, I loved the Pilot. It was a great episode in response to introducing the characters, and Max's love for Liz, etc. Also, 285 South. Even though I'm a die-hard fan of Max & Liz, I just loved the chemistry between Michael and Maria. It was really fun to watch. Independence Day was also one of my favorite, because of the side of Michael that we got to see. I'd love to see that side of him more in season two. Another episode I really loved was Blind Date. Although I DID NOT like the ending between M/L, I loved the scenes between Max and Kyle. It put a smile on my face when I was watching it. Crazy was one of my favorites, too. I liked the scfi suspense. It kept you on' the edge of your seat; the thing w/ Topolosky and all that. It was cool. I also loved Max to the Max, because I enjoyed watching the Nasedo Max (although I don't want him to come back!), and it was suspensful. Okay, I know I forgot some other episodes that I loved but I'll stop here. > [What was your least favorite episode last season. And why? > What would you have like to have seen played out differently?] I forgot a lot of things that I disliked from season 1, so bear with me. Some of the scenes with Tess just annoyed me. I know a lot of people are saying that, but I just can't not say it. [Do you feel the season was wrapped up too quickly in 'Destiny?'] Yeah, I do. There are still a lot of things we, the fans, want to know and we're on the edge of our seats waiting! I think Destiny should have been longer [like a two hour show], and explained a little more. [Do you think that Hank, Michael's foster father, 'got what he deserved' in Independence Day?] No one deserves to be murdered, as someone else said earlier. Dying is way to big a punisment, even for a cruel man like Hank. > [Do you think we should see more of the character's parents > in the next season, as they suddenly took a back seat to > other storylines last season?] I would love to see more of the parent's concerns in season 2. I know if I just disapeared for the night without even giving my parents a call, they would be going out of they're minds! I seriously doubt that everyone's parents [especially the Parkers, Evans, and Amy De Luca] just went to sleep without even wondering where they're kids are. It's just not realistic, but hey, this is a tv show, isn't it? Everything isn't always realistic. > [Do you like having Valenti as part of the 'gang' now? Why?] Valenti won't really 'be' part of the 'gang', because I know if I were them, I still wouldn't give Valenti my full, 100% trust. But I don't mind him being in the storyline a bit mroe. > [Do you think Max and Liz are truly meant to be together, > or that people shouldn't date outside their own species?] I think Max and Liz are soulmates, and they are meant together. The show just wouldn't be the same if they were apart forever. > [Likewise, do you think that Michael and Maria stand a > chance to get back together?] Michael isn't like Max, and I don't think Michael and Maria can salvage their relationship as easily [even though it's not easy] as Max and Liz could. Sometimes you just can't get through to Michael, so I'd say that he needs to mature before he can be in a relationship, atleast the kind that Maria wants. > [For you north American viewers, has the move from > Wednesday to Monday nights been better for you? > If you're overseas, is it shown at an > inconvenient time for it to catch more viewers?] >> I like it better on Monday than Wednesdays. Mike challenged me to say something about his namesake's big issue. He said . . . >In this episode ['Independence Day.' ] their family life was dealt with in >a pretty realistic way [snip]. It helped explain his behavior [snip] He >doesn't just keep people at a distance because of who he really is, but >because of his bad experiences with people as he grew up. (Which is pretty >sad, when you think about it.) One of the problems I have with the casting of Michael (which other people who've responded to the questionnaire have picked up, but blamed on the actor when I don't think it's his fault) is that there's a discontinuity arising from the way in which the original relationships and characters in the books by Melinda Metz have been adapted for the tv show. I won't go into the whole thing of 'Max' being a blond now - but it's that sort of problem! When the writers worked out - with their casting possibilities on the table in front of them, I guess - how they'd re-write the characters to take advantage of the 'best' actors they believed they had available (choosing Jason Behr and not, thank goodness, making him dye his hair - that sort of thing) one of the calculations they made was that JB's personality as Max required a foil, a different kind of personality to play against in his male-alien friend. They may not have realised it when they made the choice, but what they did was to cast a right-brained Michael for their left-brained Max - which is pretty much opposite to Metz's presentation in the early novels. Max's character isn't very clearly right-brained in the books (let's take Bruce Willis or Tom Hanks as models of what a right-brained personality's like: sort of cuddly but assertive, 'like me despite my faults') but Michael's character in the books is very, very clearly left-brained (Rob Lowe, Cameron Bancroft, either of the London brothers: sort of 'get off me', 'leave me alone', 'let's do this now for fun but don't look for commitment'). Turning that on its head in the tv show means that some of the plot lines don't work properly. The writers have made some switches to compensate: in the books, it's Michael who gets captured and imprisoned in the 'white room', for example. But the contrast between the Evans' cuddly home life, which would be natural for a cuddlier Max than ours (and which women are supposed to like, even though tv Isabel clearly finds it irritating, suggesting that she, like all the female characters except Maria, is 'left-brained', not right), and Michael's awful chucking around between foster homes, might have come out of a text-book description of what the two kinds of personalities would say about their family life. If you looked in a very, very basic 'Psychological Medicine for Newbies', it would assert that calm, happy families make people who are nice, sweet, and happy with themselves who bond well with others; and that disrupted upbringing makes for miserable, anti-social, selfish people who can't commit. It's bull: you're born left- or right-brained, and you grow up using the bits of your surroundings that are 'relevant' to your personality. There are lots of really happy people who've grown up in foster homes, and there have been lots of book-Michaels who explain their personal problems by it. And let's be clear - just because it's easiest to characterise a left-brained person as incapable of commitment because it gives you the idea of the contrast, it doesn't mean they're all bastards - only that they're different in outlook to right-brained people, who are the ones who always complain! So the problem I have with *believing* Michael's background in the tv show is that if Michael's character as played by Brandon Fehr had been in a foster-home sequence like book Michael, he would have behaved differently, and wouldn't have had the same problems - he would have smoothed his way through any disagreements, the way you'd expect tv or book Max to do. I have the same problem with *believing* that Max (as we see him) could really be 'in love' with this Liz. Though they make a lovely couple to look at, I don't believe there's a jot of off-screen chemistry between them. I don't know anything about the actors' private lives, but I'd expect Jason to like 'cuddly' women who are assertive and quite powerful but who believe in a strong family life; and 'Liz' to like pretty much the same kind of man (think of Demi Moore's reasons for marrying Bruce Willis and you'll catch what I'm saying). So my answer to your suggestion, Mike, is that people *do* get born with personalities that condition their outlook and so sometimes their behaviour isn't *just* the result of what's happened to them - but a good childhood produces a happy adult, and a difficult one (where the child's problems, whatever they are, aren't tackled successfully) can produce a horror. I've seen many clients - for example brothers and sisters - who've come out of 'good' families' or 'bad' ones, and been like peas in a pod or like alien cuckoos even though their treatment is identical. One of the things I love about the show is the way it embodies the sense of alienation, outsider-ness, that most of us feel growing up, by finding many different narrative expressions of alienation (being an alien or not, being in love or not, being violent or not, all sorts of varieties). When the writers are writing on instinct for their cast, I think they frequently get the right feel and the plots 'work'; when they're adapting elements of the books, I think they sometimes go wrong and miss the mark. I think I've written enough without adding any more in response to the other questions - though there's a risk I might write something about episodes as they get re-broadcast here. If you want to know more about the left- and right- brained personality types, you won't be surprised to hear that I've written a book about it (and other things to do with personality) - you can look it up on Amazon.com, either under my name or by its title, Being Happier. Or e-mail me off list, by all means. Cheers, Colin. Book Michael doesn't use his homelife as an excuse the way tv Michael does. Book Michael adapts and gets by, learning to build a different kind of family out of his friends. He is still hurt and lonely, but he doesn't lash out at every person he meets. TV Michael refuses to build ANY kind of family, using Hank as an excuse to be, frankly, an ass at times. It irritates me that tv Michael can behave so poorly, and the viewers are supposed to understand that it's because of his poor upbringing. Somewhere along the way, you stop getting to behave like a jerk just because your past isn't roses and cream. Interestingly enough though, and your explanation sheds light on this for me too, I infinitely prefer Michael in any incarnation over Max. Now I like Max, but he'd drive me nuts in any reality. Being left-brained myself, I just don't want too much of the cuddly stuff. There were some episodes where every time Max and Liz met up, there was a moment or two of long, soulful kisses, and I was rolling my eyes right there with Isabel. Right-brained, tv Michael, though a jerk at times, is much more my cup of tea, and left-brained, book Michael is my ideal. TV Michael refuses to build ANY kind of >family, using Hank as an excuse to be, frankly, an ass >at times. I agree that they're different in that way - but one of the things that's interesting in the book, which tells me that MM knows her left brained people pretty well, is the way she shows how quickly and intensely Michael falls 'in love' with his brother Trevor, prioritising that relationship above his other friendships, no matter that they're much more firmly established than the new one with Trevor. It's because left-brained people (I wonder if this goes for you, too?) feel black inside, surprised that anyone might value them, but therefore sometimes incredibly dependent on people they come to believe they really can trust. Because I normally meet people who are more or less wobbly - at least, they're the ones I talk to about how they feel - I'm used to relatively extreme versions of these feelings and experiences, but they seem to be 'true' for 'ordinary' people too . . . So the gap between feeling totally disconnected from caring about anyone, and feeling absolutely intensely close to someone in particular, seems much stronger than the generalised 'please like me' warmth of a right-brained person, who is prone to a different kind of self-absorption, one that makes them so wrapped up in their own feelings that they don't respect the feelings and rights of the people they say they love. >It irritates me that tv Michael can behave >so poorly, and the viewers are supposed to understand >that it's because of his poor upbringing. Somewhere >along the way, you stop getting to behave like a jerk >just because your past isn't roses and cream. I try telling that kind of common sense to some of my wobblers. To my surprise, it works sometimes! But not often. I wonder whether Brandon Fehr realises how strongly he manifests the jerk bit of his character? Or whether Jason Behr realises that if he stops working at it, he can look *truly* alien, as though he's somewhere else? >I infinitely prefer >Michael in any incarnation over Max. If it's Brandon's version you're thinking of, that supports your self-analysis as left-brained (prioritising thinking over feeling). The book version would look more like JB than BF, and not at all like CH who's the rightest brained one of the lot! >Now I like Max, >but he'd drive me nuts in any reality. Unfortunately for me, I'm a sucker for that chilled, don't touch me or I'll kill you, look. >Being >left-brained myself, I just don't want too much of the >cuddly stuff. But I've just spent an hour with a (really nice but sometimes miserable) left-brained woman who's been coming to terms with the ways in which she needs security and purpose as well as independence. It's fantastically complicated, being a real live person! >There were some episodes where every >time Max and Liz met up, there was a moment or two of >long, soulful kisses, and I was rolling my eyes right >there with Isabel. Yup, been there! But you wouldn't like book Michael in real life - and the challenge will be to find a Brandon-type who doesn't make you want to retch (Brit-speak for barf) while still giving you the security and unconditional regard you'll always claim you don't want . . . The > book version would look more like JB than BF, and > not at all like CH who's > the rightest brained one of the lot! Well, I prefer Michael over Max in either form. Brendan's version irritates me beause of the jerk effect and his refusal to allow others their feelings. The book Michael is my favorite of the bunch because he maintains that independent, loner quality without bludgeoning everyone with his sad childhood. I *think* I'd do well with the book version in real life, but who knows? As a left-brainer, a proper balance would be with a more right-brained person, which would be the Brendan version. This has been interesting. What is your take on the Metz women vs the tv version? Did the writers flipflop personalities there too? And why?] Hmm... That's a hard one. I really liked Crazy. But 285 South is the show that hooked me. I did like Leaving Normal, it was a tearjerker. [What was your least favorite episode last season. And why? What would you have like to have seen played out differently?] I disliked most of Sexual Healing, there were moments that made it really uncomfortable especially with my kids in the room. And Blind Date didn't thrill me either even though drunk Kyle and Max was funny. [Do you feel the season was wrapped up too quickly in 'Destiny?'] Yes, but I do understand why they did it the way they did it. [Do you think that Hank, Michael's foster father, 'got what he deserved' in Independence Day?] I don't think he deserved to die, a harsh punishment would have been okay. But it did set my feelings about Nasedo (Nacedo??) in motion. [Do you think we should see more of the character's parents in the next season, as they suddenly took a back seat to other storylines last season?] I miss Amy DeLuca. I really liked her. Sci-fi and drama are fine but I like a little humor in there and Amy almost always made me smile. Gee... I miss those things that made me laugh in the episodes. [Do you like having Valenti as part of the 'gang' now? Why?] I don't think he'll be part of the *gang*. I think he's like the father figure but he really isn't the last word. [What roles do you think the Sheriff and Kyle could have next season, now that they know their secret?] They probably won't have much to do, especially Kyle. I do wish Kyle were on more because he was one of the characters that made me smile and laugh out loud. And, like I said before, I miss that. [Do you think Max and Liz are truly meant to be together, or that people shouldn't date outside their own species?] I do think they have a *connection* but... I think they will get back together because that was where the show started. [Likewise, do you think that Michael and Maria stand a chance to get back together?] I love Michael and Maria as a couple and I want them back together. They seem more *real* to me, but then the soulful looks and lovey dovey stuff bores me. But I think for plot purposes they will have *problems* getting there. And if you go by most TV shows, couples have to have conflicts or they are just boring to watch. [For you north American viewers, has the move from Wednesday to Monday nights been better for you? If you're overseas, is it shown at an inconvenient time for it to catch more viewers?] The move hasn't bothered me at all. I just have to remember and I was bad at it for the first week or so. Each one of them had quite a bit of heart to them, which is something you don't always find in a sci-fi show. As someone else mentioned, I wished we could have known just a bit more about Liz's grandmother, as it would have helped the audience also feel a bit more for her. But these are the types of episodes I personally enjoy the most. > Hmmm... I'm trying to think of an episode I didn't like. I would > have to go with "Independence Day" because while I like the idea > and character of Michael, Brendon Fehr's portrayal of the role is > ghastly.... That's interesting, and as I'm reading ahead on the list, I'm wondering if you think so for similar reasons that Colin Roth cited? > I would like to see more of Amy DeLuca and Diane Evans, but the > rest of the parents didn't really strike me as "watchable" week > after week. Amy really was on of the best supporting characters- > I hope they do stuff with her next season I agree -- there's just something not natural about not seeing them from time to time. Plus, the Amy/Valenti relationship never really played out. As someone else stated, I assume they will probably use this as a continuing subplot to help maintain interest in Valenti's role in the show. And I wonder what Amy will think of her car being shot up? It's certainly a good advertisement for VW. :) Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: JTV Subject: [roswell] Dido airplay...?! But I have yet to hear it played on the radio. "Here With Me" is an awesome song and I love the rest of Dido's songs too. I have not been able to find Dido's album, but i downloaded all her songs in mp3 format. So i can listen to them whenever i'm at my comp. Not as good as the actual cd, but hey....it still rocks!
