As you know, I agree with this, and after having a second opportunity to watch it when it was aired again, I still agree. I do notice, however, that some others felt that the episode was a bit too 'preachy,' and that Liz and Maria (but especially Liz) have never indicated that they were religious in any way. Another inconsistency would have been Isabel's statement that she always gets involved during the holidays, but she's never indicated that before either. (We may remember her and Max joking about this in 'Into the Woods.') It didn't bother me that much, but what did you think? > -tess & kyle: > ok, now, i never hated tess. i have always liked her, just not with max, > per se. but kyle and her are a trip together. I had problems seeing where Kyle's character was going to go this season, but the unexpected Buddha twist and relationship with Tess is great, and something I certainly didn't foresee. I also liked the way the episode didn't go on about their 'mission,' which was a nice change of pace. I guess I'm just not warming up to the Royalty idea yet. But you're right, the Valenti's and Tess scenes was a well-written subplot. I was beginning to wonder what happened to all the adults, so it was nice to see Amy again. > -michael & Maria - okay, now these two used to be my favorite couple. i > loved the banter and interaction. but for quite a long time, i think > michael hasn't been much more than an abusive jerk, Michael's character has grown in some episodes, only to be thrown back into the pile to be reconstructed from scratch. I'm not sure why they keep doing this. In one episode, you think Michael's finally becoming a part of [human] society, and the next he's back to his old self. And of course, it hurts the relationship with Maria. But she really hasn't been putting up with it, as she's found interest in Brody. (By the way, I noticed him in last week's The Fugitive doing a mediocre American accent. Not bad, though.) > -i liked that michael had wished he could have helped save some > kids. Yes, that is one of those redeeming moments after being a jerk. But some of their healing abilities have also been questioned by some other lists, I notice. I wonder why Max has to be the most powerful? Still, Michael was able to heal Riverdog's twisted or broken ankle in one episode. I guess his powers are still more honed to be for aggressive purposes. > -was it a real ghost. or just max's conscience? i think it was real...... Again, this is another topic that is under question on other lists. Yes, I'm certain it was a real ghost, as Liz's grandmother was a real ghost. How would his own conscience known that Sydney was taken to Phoenix? I suppose he could have found out otherwise, but the episode was supposed to be one of the many "ghost of Christmas" visitation knock-offs. It didn't bother me at all, though. > i cried the whole time practicaly.........especailly when he was healing > those kids, when he saw them as babies and toddlers..... > wonderful episode. Yep, I hope they keep up the sentimentality of the show. I wonder if the next episode will be back to 'dealing with our enemies?' Any synopsis out there? I think some of the cast members had been making appearances sponsored by Levi's, or someone like that, but I'm afraid I have no idea if they're going to be doing anything like that again. It always *seems* like they (the shows in general) make public appearances early on in the series, and/or while the show is still very popular. They still contain plenty of sci-fi stuff, but a much more enjoyable mix of what we've seen in the past two seasons. But as you say, the storylines are very different. There are just some things that the TV show probably couldn't do, such as the group being able to see people's auras and that sort of thing... Why? Because the books suck! I can't get over it! My biggest problem: Max is blond. My second biggest problem: Ulysses F. Olsen (UFO) High School--how cheesebally is that? For crying out loud! And the story itself, despite that it's creative, is just horribly written. An eight-year-old could have written the sentences. Plus, the story, although creative, is way too farfetched. It's just bizarre and totally bogus... My third biggest problem: If Liz is hispanic, why isn't her name Isabel???? Cuz Isabel is so the Spanish version of Liz. Her sister had a Spanish name--why wouldn't Liz? See, little things like this just contribute even more to the overall dumbness. And the whole aura and scent thing--I just can't stand that--it's so hoky. But, anyway, that's just my opinion. If you really like the show, don't read the books; they're just bad. And I know, since I haven't actually read the books, what right to I have to say this? But I've read enough of the books, just a few pages of each, to know that they are so not worth the read for people who like to read well-written, intelligent stories. But they had to base the show on the books, and the books just have so many twists and turns...... The books are very good, i think. If you like to read, get them. The actual point of my e-mail was not which came first, but that the books are badly written. They're about as well-written as those Goosebumps books-remember those? When I read the first chapter of the first books, it so reminded me of the writing style of the Goosebumps books. And me finding the whole aura thing hoky has nothing to do with the show. If the show never existed, and I had just happened to pick up the first book, I still couldn't have read it--it's just way too cheesy. And I was just trying to be humorous, saying I had a problem with Max being blond, but apparently, I'm the only one who finds myself humorous--which really isn't news to me. Anyway, my point is, the books are bad because of the writing style and the cheesy little details inserted (ie UFO High), and I just can't stand that aura thing, but that's probably just me. So, hate me, call me stupid, I don't care. I am not ashamed of shelling out money for the books even though I don't wanna read them--I am compulsively obsessed with Roswell. And these are my opinions. I do realize that without the books there would be no show, but now that there is a show, there is really no need to read the books--IMHO (and a very humble opinion it is--believe me). == ~Emily (but then you probably knew that...) I don't think the writing is spectacular, and I too have a problem with UFO High (I always wonder why the series is Roswell High when the actual high school isn't). The show, in my own humble opinion, is multitudes better, but I must admit to buying every book and placing them prominently on my bookshelf for all to see (that is, for all to see if anyone could get through the clutter on the floor TO the bookshelf). The books go in a completely different direction from the books, and originally, the script for the pilot was pretty similar. I must say, I'm extremely happy it was changed. Still, it is Roswell, and if something Roswell is cheesy, or not too well-written, I suppose I can still accept it. Erin (who's just talking up a storm tonight - must be the fact that I have an essay to write) PS: I really hope I haven't offended anyone, and I apologize if I did. It's a Metro signing, right? Have you been to any of them before? I
met
James Marsters (twice) and Juliet Landau (Spike and Drusilla,
respectively,
of Buffy) and Eliza Dushku (Faith, of Buffy and more recently, Angel)
there.
The signings are pretty well organized, and it's oh-so-much fun to

True, the show is based on the books, but you can tell hey only used the books as foundation because there are so many differences. The way they wrote the books are kinda crappy like since its a TV show now, everyone will buy the books no matter what because they have the cast on the cover. That was my 1st mistake. Like for instance, Max has blond hair, and Isabel gets a love interest who happens to be another alien ( with the personality of Michael and the charm of Max to the one-hundredth power) and she of course, chooses him over Alex. Then the guy gets killed in mall or something and one of the people from town who also happens to be an alien helps them cover it up in the mall. The books are a good idea, but I thought they would be a good way for me to catch up on stuff I missed, but I like the show better than the books. Who knows? I agree, and something else to keep in mind (I guess just for argument's sake), is that the books AND the TV Show were conceptualized at the same time. Although the books were released before show, I don't know if that was actually planned or not. And although Metz came up with a lot of character backgrounds, it was largely a joint creation, just with the two story lines going their separate paths, for whatever reason. Either way, as long as you keep in mind that the books are meant for a young/teenage audience (as are most the shows on the WB), they're still quite enjoyable. Now, enough of that thread. Nothing new to comment about tonight's repeat episode, but the trailers for next week's new (yes, finally!) episode is finally going to talk about something that I have certainly wondered about. It always seemed to me, that the pod squad's bodies were most likely 'taken' from some living humans in '47, so I guess we'll see to what extent (cloned, murdered, etc.) Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: AngelClouds@aol.com Subject: Re: [roswell] argh! another rerun Date: 16 Jan 2001 01:06:57 EST Does anyone know what Courtney's real name is? Sweeps is coming up, so they save the new episodes for that period. If they can get the good ratings during sweeps, then that is more advertising $$$, which is what keeps the show on the air. Roswell is not keeping the lead0in audience, but I knew it wouldn't. Nothing will until they put another family type drama there. The same people that flock to watch 7th Heaven aren't the same kind of people that are going to watch a sci-fi/teen-angst drama. In fact, They would be better off to put Gilmore Girls there, and move Roswell to that spot, I think. It seems more logical, and it seems they would draw more of the same audience than 7th/Roswell. But I am just a viewer, so no one really cares what we think ;-) Sapphire ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Tuesday, January 16, 2001 9:30 AM > I knew there would be a rerun, so I didn't watch it. :[ > I missed the trailor. Sapphire said: >The same people that flock to watch >7th Heaven aren't the same kind of people that are going to >watch a sci-fi/teen-angst drama. I'm not sure that's true, you know. It's certainly not true for me as an individual, and I guess it might not be true for audiences at large. Not everyone goes for their choice of tv programme by genre. I'm not a watcher of 'sci-fi' for the sake of it, and I only watch them when a sci-fi programme satisfies other 'wants' of mine. What I look for in a 'good' programme, one I want to watch regularly, is a charismatic lead who has an emotionally rich role that has him navigating interesting challenges that sometimes embody my own 'issues' but might as easily be issues that I don't have much direct involvement in. I've only seen a few episodes of 7th Heaven because it was only shown here briefly, but I was happy to watch it when it was on because - as he's shown to a more substantial degree since in 'Teaching Mrs Tingle' - Barry Watson's a pretty decent actor and can pull a bit of weight out of a flimsy script *and* look good. 'Once & Again' has been on here in the UK during the autumn, and I've enjoyed watching that for Billy Campbell and Shane West, as well as the women actors - it's a thoroughly good emotional drama, in my book. No sci-fi to be seen. My strongest sci-fi enthusiasm has been for Lois & Clark, and like many of that series' fans, my interest lay largely in what we called the 'B' plots, the romantic lines between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher - I was one of the ones who thought them getting married made the series even *better*, because it tackled new issues in an interesting way. First Wave's first season was, I thought, very good indeed, but the second season - which went the Roswell path, with less 'human interest' and more 'sci-fi' - has been dismal, and I've entirely lost interest. What caught my interest in Roswell, initially, was Jason Behr's glittery gloom - the way the black clouds parted into ravishing bright light while his affection for 'Liz' was allowed to blossom. It was the emotional content I liked, and the sci-fi was just a vehicle for the 'teen angst', for me. That means that my responses to the second season have been *very* ambivalent. I've enjoyed some of the most recent episodes much more than the early ones, but there have been moments that seemed to me to be so poor that they will probably prevent the second series being sold to UK broadcasters. The weird 'royal' business alone will probably rule it out - not because we're worried about upsetting any real royals, but because the issue is so clumsily handled. I've found the non-sequiturs, the jittery continuity and the concentration on 'facts' about granoliths and other such nonsense, tiresome to the last degree - I want to know what 'Liz' is going to do about being in love with 'Max', and what 'Maria' is going to do about her feelings for 'Michael'. For me, at least, the rest of it is just contextual blather for the characters I've come to care about. Cheers, Colin. Even if it that's how it ends up to be explained on the show--it's not possible! They were engineered to look a certain way before they came to earth. Anyway, the ship crashed, so we don't even know where they were actually supposed to end up. Apparently not Roswell. I know that's semi-irrelevant, but I wanna know where they were going! Cuz they weren't going to Roswell; that's just where they crashed--they didn't crash on purpose. But...that's not what the ratings are showing, nor the demographics. The demographics for 7th Heaven and Roswell are vastly different. I don't have the site handy right now, but the stats are interesting. There are people that DO look for a show on basis of genre, or what it's about. It's like those people that make fun of me because I watch Buffy, but then watch it and see that it's not at all what they thought it was, and now like the show. If people see promos of all this alien stuff, and that is stuff they wouldn't normally watch, they never get far enough to KNOW that it's about other things. I've been doing a lot more lecturing recently - and there's lots coming over the next few months, too, so I've been concentrating on getting that organised rather than enjoying watching Roswell episodes! Having done my 'Artist as SuperHero' lecture last August, with clips of Lois & Clark, a New Zealand show called The Tribe, and talking about Roswell as well as Fight Club and other things - even a few artists! - I've used up my quota of tv references for a while! Having the great privilege of being able to watch the current series only a week or two after you, I've found myself a bit 'conditioned' by some of the responses that have been offered on the list - for example, I thought the episode in which 'futureMax' gets obliterated was going to be awful, as most people didn't like it, but I reacted entirely different when I actually saw it, and found it one of the best of the season so far. I've been meaning - since before Christmas - to run through the tapes again and write about my reactions to the episodes we've seen so far, but there just hasn't been time yet. I will try soon, though, even at the risk of thoroughly horrifying some members! >I enjoy different shows for different reasons - Roswell has >just been an obsession for me - The complete draw for me was >the Max and Liz relationship - period!!! It was certainly my way in, though I've come to enjoy more than just the relationship since the first catch. >Roswell (the first season) showed how >people formed friendships, fell in love, etc. - I really >don't know where the second season is trying to go Me too - because the announced increase in sci-fi content seems to have produced a piebald horse of a show, with brown blotches where it used to be more consistently coloured. To make a slightly unfair analogy, it feels as though they've put chocolates and salted peanuts in the same bowl, to try and please more different sorts of people - but actually only disappointing more in the process. Having said that, though, my first watching of the series so far has left a few really strong images - the very last scene (I think) of the 1947 episode, for example, where Michael talks to the 'old man' in a way that really penetrates his own important issues, and uses a flame as a visual metaphor for what's being talked about. While Roswell can scale those heights, I'll keep watching, even if it's sometimes hugely frustrating too. Cheers, Colin. Date: 23 Jan 2001 12:50:34 -0600 Definitely an interesting episode, since it finally shows some signs of 'returning to its roots,' as the following article states (thanks to the PlanetX list): http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2001-01/22/13.00.tv I'm glad the producers [must have] heard some of the cries from the fans regarding character-based development of the show, and how we wanted at least some of that back. Certainly, "To Serve and Protect" shows some evidence of this. Things I liked: -Return of Grant Sorenson, only because he disappeared from the story so mysteriously; -Return of the judge, who granted Michael the petition for emancipation (at least, I think this was the same actor.); -Reminding us that Roswell is a small town, and the characters are from a small town, and the mention of the '285' highway (just as a reminder of "285 South"); -Return of humans as the bigger enemy than some ill-conceived storyline of alien enemies that we know nothing about; -Good strong storyline for Valenti; -Obviously, another new hybrid alien. Things I didn't like: -The sheriff has "known the Fosters for years", but did not recognize the daughter when she showed up; -Who was the gunman?? Odd that we cut away from the scene so quickly, with no mention of motive or intent; -Where was Colin/Alex? I don't think Michael had but a few lines either; -Weak character establishment, namely introduction of new characters in a soap-operatic fashion. Who's Sean, for instance? No clear reason why he was in the story, or what kind of trouble he is going to be. I didn't see any point in his introduction at this time. I can only guess that the gunman was in some way trying to lure the pod squad into saving the girl, then knocking them off. But why? Is he a 'real' alien hunter? I also hope when the show is in need of ratings, they don't constantly come up with another hybrid alien to deal with. We already have a Tess. There's more, but this is all I have time to post. In any case, FINALLY a new episode! Colin Roth is probably ready to come all the way over here to kick me in the shins since there hasn't been a new episode to send in so long. ;-) Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: DaniLynn27@aol.com Subject: Re: [roswell] To Serve and Protect... Date: 23 Jan 2001 14:28:57 EST << loved the scene with max and the bullets. It looked kinda like matrix. >> Me too. Not only reminded me of "The Matrix" but also a Buffy episode, "Primeval" where she basically did the same thing, blocked bullets with a force field (for lack of a better phrase) And so happy to see Krakow! I loved him on "MSCL" and I even tuned into a rather bad ABC series he had a role on, "Relativity" just to see him. BTW, the guy's real name is Devon Gummersall. So we have a name to call him besides Krakow or Sean :) Really enjoyed last night's episode thanks to our dry spell of reruns. I think it made me appreciate it more! And is it me, or is anyone else really missing the presence of Colin Hanks? I mean, they threw Michael in for a scene or two. I know there are episodes here and there where a character doesn't show up at all, but he's been missing a LOT it seems. (I did miss the opening few miinutes of the show, so if he showed up there, I'll shut up now LOL) Another scene I liked was Kyle trying to see if he had powers and then Tess tricking him with the remote. Made me laugh. I thought they pretty > much told each other > everything when it came to their powers and stuff. I was confused by that too, but I think we have to assume a lot of information gets shared 'off-screen.' For example, the whole subplot about Kyle freaking out about possible changes Max made in him HAD to come from a conversation we never saw. The last this idea was ever referred to was "Max in the City" when it was learned (from Ava) that Max changed Liz in some fundamental way when he healed her and she now has certain abilities. Kyle wasn't around for that revelation (for that matter, neither were Max and Tess), so WHEN did Kyle learn about it? Liz vaguely alluded to the possibility of 'changes' way back in "End of the World," but that theory was unconfirmed for weeks. So I figure that Liz eventually mentioned it to Kyle, because once she learned that she DID have abilities, she would have quickly thought about Kyle and the possibilities there. She's that kind of logical, thinking-it-all-through person. Still, it does get frustrating, because we never know exactly who possesses what information. For a while, nobody told anything. Isabel hid the Vilandra thing, Max had information he didn't share, etc. And has Michael EVER mentioned that whole Michael-faction among the Skins? Maybe the humans share information among themselves much better than the podsters do? Chantel __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! did you think she was a hybrid?  i wasn't sure.....when Isabel had
that
flash - it wasn't like other flashes, it was almost like looking at
some
cellualr structures.  maybe this is someone who shares her DNA - i
mean,
they had to get human DNA from somewhere.  just another thought,
altho you
are probably right, and she probably is a hybrid.....

wasn't it grant?  that's what i figured, since she had seen grant in
the
vision she had............

i thought it was so strange that they didn't have michael in at
hardly at
all, BUT i did enjoy seeing so closeness between Max & Iz again.
even when
they were just vegging in front if the tv, it was nice seeing them
just be
brother & sister for a change......

my guess is that he is trying to kill them, altho he had many clear
head
shots that he didn't take so who knows?  could he be soemone hired by
kavar?
oh i hope not.   i liked the human enemies much better too.  it was
also
more..heehee.....realisitic......than this "cloned royalty to save a
planet
somewhere out there."  they could have gone sci-fi without it being
quite so
ridiculous.  i better not even get started with that.........

Date: 24 Jan 2001 19:46:45 -0800 (PST) Dude, Grant is evil! I knew it all along. He tried to kill Laurie (or torture her or whatever), Max, Valenti, and Isabel--who he was apparently sweet on. What an ass! However, I would have been happier if he had just stayed disappeared without an explanation for his disappearance, because I really hate him! I mean, it was wonderfully dumb of them to have Grant disappear after "Surprise," but no Grant with no explanation is far better than the return of Grant. I am just so happy that Krakow is on what used to be the sci-fi "My So-Called Life." Maybe he can help turn it around, even though his character seems like a loser. Oh, well, a girl can dream, can't she? I so don't get how they could possibly explain this hybrid shit in a way that makes sense. It's just dumb, especially Liz and Kyle being "changed." So what exactly happened to all those kids at the hospital, then? HUH?! Anyway, I don't like it. And I was thinking, if the aliens can produce human DNA, then they could produce any kind of human DNA they wanted and they wouldn't have to actually steal it from an actual human. Or maybe that's too far-fetched. But I feel the need to bring up the point that the ship *crashed* which implies an accident of some kind, which implies that the aliens weren't heading for New Mexico in the first place. I'm not sure how that fits into the whole human DNA thing, but I'll get back to you on that. That's it from this girl. Later days. == ~Emily (but then you probably knew that...) Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Chantel Reynolds Subject: [roswell] Campaign updates from Chantel Date: 31 Jan 2001 07:57:32 -0800 (PST) Hey Everyone, This is the latest regarding the Roswell campaign. Thought I would forward it on, as requested. Chantel ********************************************* An Urgent Appeal From The Campaign Crew Hey Roswell Fans, We're writing to you tonight to address a very serious matter concerning Roswell. Our intention isn't to cause panic with what we are about to say, but to gain everyone's FULL cooperation. Unfortunately, based on the present ratings, we believe that Roswell is in greater jeopardy now than it has been at any time this season. Although Roswell's overnight ratings for last night were pretty good (4.2/6), Roswell's national ratings were only 2.6/4. This is not so good. The national ratings are in a downward spiral, leaving our favorite show's future swinging in the wind. The bad news is that we only have a week before sweeps begins, and we have to act quicly because of that. The good news is that Roswell fans CAN make a difference once again. The only way that we can be effective is for ALL OF US to work together. To better provide the fans with a direction in which to act, we have come up with a list. We despirately need EVERY SINGLE Roswell fan to do as much as possible to help the show. Here's what we think will help. Items are placed in the order of importance. Those at the top of the list are those that we feel are most imperative. 1) We need to spread the word about Roswell. Please tell all of your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, classmates and acquaintances about the show. This is by far the best way to get the ratings higher. Some of the people that we happen to tell will be Nielsen viewers. In addition spread the word at message boards, chatrooms and everywhere else on the internet and in the world around you. We have to increase the public's awareness of Roswell ! Be creative! Fans have explored many options in the past to increase Roswell's popularity. If any of your friends would like the Newsletter, they only need to send an e-mail to scott73@saveroswell.com . 2) Get more people involved in helping with the campaigns. Get other Roswell fans to help you! Get your friends to help. Even if they are not huge fans, they could do you the favor if they have time to spare. This is really important, folks! Send this notice to every Roswell fan that you know. 3) Please make a donation to PCF if you haven't already. We're trying to help a child and generate publicity for the show at the same time. Ask others to donate. Organize a benefit. Send the press release from the previous newsletter to as many media organizations that you can, by both e-mail and snail mail. These include newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations, etc. This is important for both local and national media. At the same time, tell them how great the show is! A good place to start is here: http://www.fanforum.com/howto/SOSsite/page4.shtml And send it to the Associated Press: Associated Press General/National Desk 50 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10020 4) Send an e-mail to The WB about how great last night's show was and how much you enjoyed it. Be specific and heartwarming. Tell them how it excites you. We need good letters every day! Accentuate only the positive. No negativity! These can be sent to faces@thewb.com . Also post on their message board at http://www.thewb.com/. Let's drown them with e-mail and postings. 5) Participate in the Season 3 letter writing campaign. More details are here: http://www.crashdown.com//news/1623.shtml 6) Write to the sponsors. We have a relatively complete list of sponsors and sample letters at: http://www.saveroswell.com/sponsors.html 7) Write to the WB Affiliates. Tell them how much you love Roswell. Send them the PCF Press Release. I will send our best contact list in another e-mail very soon. If every Roswell fan is dedicated enough to do everything on this list, WE WILL PREVAIL. We need to act quickly and cohesively. Please spend as much of your spare time on this as possible. Thanks again for everyone's help and support. We really need it in order to secure a 3rd season.
