The last three episodes have been so suspenseful and well written and the thought of the WB cancelling the show gets more ludicrous by the week. I can only hope that they've watched these last three episodes closely to see how the initial sci-fi aspects have intensified. Having said that, another good episode. I have to admit that I found some plot lines slightly confusing, but I did like that the story arc has been moved along and that some questions are starting to get answered. Here are some thoughts and observations: 1) Michael and Isabel: Well, I have to admit that at first there was a very high ick factor in my mind about this coupling. To me, Isabel and Michael might as well be brother and sister. But then I saw them together, both in "reality" and in the dream plane tonight, and I have to say that there is a certain...something there. I don't know if it's chemistry or not but there is certainly a nice rapport between the two. There's an easiness to their togetherness that I like. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying they should be a couple, but the thought is less heinous to me now. I will now duck from the rocks thrown at me from the Candygirls ;) I am slightly confused about their "pregnancy" dream but that's later. 2) The notion of destiny versus fate again: I'm sorry to beat a dead horse here but I am really loving what the writers are doing here by pinning destiny and fate against each other. From what I gleaned from tonight's episode, Tess is implying that she is Max's destiny. That somehow, they are "meant" to be together. Though, I'm not a big fan of Emilie's acting, I do like how she's mixed up the pot a bit. Since the inception of the show, we've been led to believe that Max and Liz are soulmates( a thought that I still hold on to). It's fascinating that the writers have now decided to sort of pull the rug out from under us and challenge that completely. Yes, he's "loved" her since the 3rd grade but are they supposed to be together? I got a lot of great responses from you last time that fate and love can change destiny in the blink of an eye, but I guess my question is, when does destiny become fate and vice versa then? Who's to say that Max wasn't supposed to save Liz and then she and Max weren't supposed to be together? Couldn't the shooting have been destiny? Couldn't it have been in the plan? 3) Tess versus Liz: As an extension of the destiny/fate discussion, I love how diametrically different Liz and Tess are feeling right now about how things are supposed to be. According to Liz, "You are who you choose to be. You're with who you choose to be with" while Tess feels that Max must be with her because it was ordained in some way. It was really interesting to see these two women, trying desperately to rationalize what was going on inside of Max. It was really quite sad though to see how they are both clinging to the hope that Max will realize who his true soulmate is, while Max is like a deer caught in the headlights. 4) Aliens vs. Humans: I thought that tonight's episode really broke down what is inherently wrong with the Max and Michael relationship. Now more than ever, I feel as if these two guys would never even speak to each other had it not been for their shared alien ancestry. Max has embraced his "human" side and is somewhat apprehensive of learning more about his "alien" side. Michael is the complete opposite, constantly feeling alien and alienated. Their confrontation in the kitchen, with both accusing the other of being afraid to be who they really are was intense and revealing. Neither one trusts the other right now. Secrets are being kept and lies being told. There really is no middle ground for them. It's either do it my way or no way. I look forward to seeing how they can get back to being as close as they once were, if it is possible at this point. 5) The relationships in Roswell: A) Max and Liz: This couple, as of now, is in trouble. Though it kills me to say that, it's true. It's sort of like they're both in emotional limbo and they have no idea how to get out of it. How sad was it when Liz asked Max what it was like to kiss Tess? Though she's trying not to, she's starting to doubt Max and she's starting to doubt herself in subtle ways. It hurts to see them this way simply because they had finally found some semblance of normalcy. B) Michael and Maria and Alex and Isabel: I am putting these two couples together because I found them both really disturbing tonight. While I'm glad that Isabel finally made the move on Alex and Michael finally said the "r" word with Maria, I would have hoped that these actions would have been prompted by the undying dedication and devotion that Maria and Alex have shown and not out of fear or confusion about their dreams. I just wanted them to be less "used." Alex and Maria have proven how much they care for their aliens and yet it takes a couple of dreams to prompt Michael and Isabel into action? I would have definetly preferred to see this done differently. C) Max and Tess: I swear, I don't know if it's because they haven't worked together for very long but I feel nothing when they're on the screen together. I hated their big confrontation scene by the rock formation. This is one couple that really lacks chemistry. I don't feel as if they have this primordial connection. I don't feel as if they belong together. This is really making that storyline ring very hollow for me. 6)Favorite Scene: The Crashdown Cafe scene where Liz revealed to Max that she was scared of Tess. I loved the way Max said, "So am I" when Liz disgustedly said, "She's[Tess]an alien, Max" . Max looked so wounded and hurt in that moment and it seemed that for the first time, Liz was actually regrettting getting involved with an alien. 7) This mysterious "pregnancy": This to me was the most difficult leap in logic. It's bizarre to me that based on one dream, Isabel would think that she was pregnant with Michael's child. My first instinct would have been that the dream was premonitory. I really don't know what to think of this one yet. Would love to hear from you guys about this because it has me completely befuddled. 8) The anti-climatic ending?: Did anyone else feel that the ending wasn't nearly as dramatic as it could have been. I kinda felt that the big reveal wasn't nearly as big as it was supposed to be. Though I felt slightly bad for Tess that she was left behind by the other three aliens, I didn't really feel anything even close to remorse. Again, this could be because I don't feel as if Tess has ingratiated herself to the group in any real emotional way. Not sure about this. Some minor thoughts: A) How great was Kyle tonight? Nick HAS to get more screen time!! "Can't beat a blonde" He's so funny :) B) Trust Valenti Dammit!!! He's more than proven to me that he's a worthy ally. It's about time they start trusting someone because the aliens need help. C)Is anyone catching the lesbian undertones that permeate the Isabel and Tess scenes? What's up with that? D) Where are the parents? What's going on here? Weekly Shallow post: Okay, did anyone else not love that Jason was in not only two different tight t-shirts but a tank top too? Again, I'm not a religious person, but PRAISE JESUS :) Oh and why do they continue to dress Tess as if she's going to a disco? I know the wardrobe people are trying to make her the opposite of Liz but come on. Did Brendan get a hair cut? It looked different. Cute but different. I would probably give this a 7.5 out of a 10. Next week looks INCREDIBLE. It also looks like a wonderful opportunity for Jason to shine. Can't wait. I can't believe we have to wait a whole week again :) Take care all! Gina :) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ "...And now I think it's kind of funny that you say you love me. One guess I had partway through was that Nacedo wants the aliens to stick together, and pair off, and the Orb has other plans. What, I'm not sure. But something chose to guide them to the Orb _through Liz_. I want to believe something's going on there. Possibly it's not Nacedo, and Tess really was manipulating them herself. Or Tess and Nacedo have had contact. And, of course, people could just be making stuff up: Tess thinks Max is destined for her because of their experience in the pod chamber and because she wants him and there are only four aliens and they should pair off. Me, I don't believe in fate or destiny. There's history and contingency and choice and chance. And for a shapeshifting species, mostly choice. But, hey. If Tess was left behind, she was probably captured by the troops we see in the Orb's memory. Well, guess she wasn't dissected. But it makes the idea that her 'father' is or military and knows what she is more plausible. But, hey two. Governmental infighting: the Army has Tess, and the FBI is still scrabbling for contact. Just because Tess babbles about destiny doesn't mean you have to believe her. What's important is if you can believe her character, not her and Max: can you believe she's been fixated on Max since they were six (or since she remembered what happened), that she's locked onto him because he's her kind and good looking and possibly has a racial purity thing either her own or from Nacedo? > that she was scared of Tess. But by one line of thinking, she shouldn't have to: they're all aliens! Their kind should stick together! But the three have their own group, and have made connections to humans, and she's warping all of that. > B) Trust Valenti Dammit!!! He's more than proven to me that he's a = > worthy ally. So there's no reason to assume what happened to Tess, at least not from the pod scene. - -xx- Damien X-) - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2000 03:07:52 EDT From: FairyRaid@aol.com Subject: Re: [roswell] SPOILERS:Thoughts and Observations about "Four Square" In a message dated 04/25/2000 12:05:03 AM Pacific Daylight Time, phoenix@ugcs.caltech.edu writes: << But hey, that was a really dumb idea, >> Lets try to keep it a little more civil, please. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2000 09:09:42 -0700 From: phoenix@ugcs.caltech.edu Subject: Re: [roswell] SPOILERS:Thoughts and Observations about "Four Square" FairyRaid@aol.com wrote: > phoenix@ugcs.caltech.edu writes: > > << But hey, that was a really dumb idea, >> > Lets try to keep it a little more civil, please.
