True, the show is based on the books, but you can tell hey only used the books as foundation because there are so many differences. The way they wrote the books are kinda crappy like since its a TV show now, everyone will buy the books no matter what because they have the cast on the cover. That was my 1st mistake. Like for instance, Max has blond hair, and Isabel gets a love interest who happens to be another alien ( with the personality of Michael and the charm of Max to the one-hundredth power) and she of course, chooses him over Alex. Then the guy gets killed in mall or something and one of the people from town who also happens to be an alien helps them cover it up in the mall. The books are a good idea, but I thought they would be a good way for me to catch up on stuff I missed, but I like the show better than the books. Who knows? I agree, and something else to keep in mind (I guess just for argument's sake), is that the books AND the TV Show were conceptualized at the same time. Although the books were released before show, I don't know if that was actually planned or not. And although Metz came up with a lot of character backgrounds, it was largely a joint creation, just with the two story lines going their separate paths, for whatever reason. Either way, as long as you keep in mind that the books are meant for a young/teenage audience (as are most the shows on the WB), they're still quite enjoyable. Now, enough of that thread. Nothing new to comment about tonight's repeat episode, but the trailers for next week's new (yes, finally!) episode is finally going to talk about something that I have certainly wondered about. It always seemed to me, that the pod squad's bodies were most likely 'taken' from some living humans in '47, so I guess we'll see to what extent (cloned, murdered, etc.) - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 01:06:57 EST From: AngelClouds@aol.com Subject: Re: [roswell] argh! another rerun Does anyone know what Courtney's real name is? Sweeps is coming up, so they save the new episodes for that period. If they can get the good ratings during sweeps, then that is more advertising $$$, which is what keeps the show on the air. Roswell is not keeping the lead0in audience, but I knew it wouldn't. Nothing will until they put another family type drama there. The same people that flock to watch 7th Heaven aren't the same kind of people that are going to watch a sci-fi/teen-angst drama. In fact, They would be better off to put Gilmore Girls there, and move Roswell to that spot, I think. It seems more logical, and it seems they would draw more of the same audience than 7th/Roswell. But I am just a viewer, so no one really cares what we think ;-) Sapphire - ----- Original Message ----- From: Drummond, Gary To: Sent: Tuesday, January 16, 2001 9:30 AM Subject: RE: [roswell] argh! another rerun > I knew there would be a rerun, so I didn't watch it. :[ > I missed the trailor. Sapphire said: >The same people that flock to watch >7th Heaven aren't the same kind of people that are going to >watch a sci-fi/teen-angst drama. I'm not sure that's true, you know. It's certainly not true for me as an individual, and I guess it might not be true for audiences at large. Not everyone goes for their choice of tv programme by genre. I'm not a watcher of 'sci-fi' for the sake of it, and I only watch them when a sci-fi programme satisfies other 'wants' of mine. What I look for in a 'good' programme, one I want to watch regularly, is a charismatic lead who has an emotionally rich role that has him navigating interesting challenges that sometimes embody my own 'issues' but might as easily be issues that I don't have much direct involvement in. I've only seen a few episodes of 7th Heaven because it was only shown here briefly, but I was happy to watch it when it was on because - as he's shown to a more substantial degree since in 'Teaching Mrs Tingle' - Barry Watson's a pretty decent actor and can pull a bit of weight out of a flimsy script *and* look good. 'Once & Again' has been on here in the UK during the autumn, and I've enjoyed watching that for Billy Campbell and Shane West, as well as the women actors - it's a thoroughly good emotional drama, in my book. No sci-fi to be seen. My strongest sci-fi enthusiasm has been for Lois & Clark, and like many of that series' fans, my interest lay largely in what we called the 'B' plots, the romantic lines between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher - I was one of the ones who thought them getting married made the series even *better*, because it tackled new issues in an interesting way. First Wave's first season was, I thought, very good indeed, but the second season - which went the Roswell path, with less 'human interest' and more 'sci-fi' - has been dismal, and I've entirely lost interest. What caught my interest in Roswell, initially, was Jason Behr's glittery gloom - the way the black clouds parted into ravishing bright light while his affection for 'Liz' was allowed to blossom. It was the emotional content I liked, and the sci-fi was just a vehicle for the 'teen angst', for me. That means that my responses to the second season have been *very* ambivalent. I've enjoyed some of the most recent episodes much more than the early ones, but there have been moments that seemed to me to be so poor that they will probably prevent the second series being sold to UK broadcasters. The weird 'royal' business alone will probably rule it out - not because we're worried about upsetting any real royals, but because the issue is so clumsily handled. I've found the non-sequiturs, the jittery continuity and the concentration on 'facts' about granoliths and other such nonsense, tiresome to the last degree - I want to know what 'Liz' is going to do about being in love with 'Max', and what 'Maria' is going to do about her feelings for 'Michael'. For me, at least, the rest of it is just contextual blather for the characters I've come to care about. Cheers, Colin. Even if it that's how it ends up to be explained on the show--it's not possible! They were engineered to look a certain way before they came to earth. Anyway, the ship crashed, so we don't even know where they were actually supposed to end up. Apparently not Roswell. I know that's semi-irrelevant, but I wanna know where they were going! Cuz they weren't going to Roswell; that's just where they crashed--they didn't crash on purpose. Plus, it was just Michael--there's supposed to be something special about Michael, that makes him "different" from the other three. Whatever... it looks freakish, and there's no way it's gonna live up to the Christmas episode. ::sigh:: I was actualy naive enough to believe it would get better after they got rid of the "dupes." == ~Emily (but then you probably knew that...) Families are what happen after people in love with each other have sex and make babies. I think Roswell is *all* about family stuff, what it is to be brothers and sisters, how outsiders become part of the family as they become steady boyfriends and girlfriends - and given a little time, what it is to have babies with them. Look at what I said first: people don't all choose what to watch by the kind of show it is - there are different things they look for, not just whether it's sci-fi, or 'family', or whatever. But...that's not what the ratings are showing, nor the demographics. The demographics for 7th Heaven and Roswell are vastly different. I don't have the site handy right now, but the stats are interesting. There are people that DO look for a show on basis of genre, or what it's about. It's like those people that make fun of me because I watch Buffy, but then watch it and see that it's not at all what they thought it was, and now like the show. If people see promos of all this alien stuff, and that is stuff they wouldn't normally watch, they never get far enough to KNOW that it's about other things. (I'm scared now.) I mean, I like the Sci-Fi aspect of the show and all, but what WB show is complete without a romantic side? I want to see how they (Max and Liz) wind up! Will she ever tell him about his future self coming back to change everything? I hope they dont totally cut out the alien/human relationships. - -Lindz - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 21:00:41 EST From: CYNNUR@aol.com Subject: Re: [roswell] Roswell High - --part1_1e.10079eb3.279656c9_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I know!!! I mean, I only started watching at first because I liked Jason Behr, and as I watched the show some more, it was like, I hope Max and Liz hook up, despite their differences! It broke my heart when she said good-bye 2 Max at the end of the last season and again when he thought she slept with Kyle! I mean, they say Liz isn't leaving, and they say the next 4 episodes will concentrate more on the ALIEN side, but they're still human! I mean, give us romantics something 2 tide us over with PLEASE!!! I got 2 admit I love the sci-fi aspect of the show, but I kinda hope that Liz is the part-alien because of her Grandma or something. In a kinda farfetched way, she could be alien, and Max's alien healing on her awakened something that only wakes up when touched by another alien or a certain age of maturity or something. And that Liz is a different type of alien and that its only passed down to certain females and that's why she's changed since Max healed her. Except...it raises questions about Kyle. Maria doesn't know who her father is, or at least we haven't met him, Maria was the last to disappear on that episode where all the humans disappear. Well, if she can't be an alien like THEM, she should be another kind of alien or a different mythical creature. Max's true love, but of another race or something. And u know what? Nobody still knows why they went through that passion induced fever and then they found that orb-transmitter. Is Kyle going to go thru that with Tess (yuck)! I hope they let the viewers know... - --part1_1e.10079eb3.279656c9_boundary Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I know!!!
