The only reason I watched 7th Heaven was because I was familiar with Stephen Collins and his body of work. He is a very good actor. I enjoy different shows for different reasons - Roswell has just been an obsession for me - The complete draw for me was the Max and Liz relationship - period!!! People in general from childhood to adult form relationships, bond with people for one reason or another (i.e. This message board...) to satisfy - as you put it "other 'wants' " Roswell (the first season) showed how people formed friendships, fell in love, etc. - I really don't know where the second season is trying to go - I really miss the story I followed so faithfully in season one and trying to enjoy and fill in for season two. I'm not a : watcher of 'sci-fi' for the sake of it, and I only watch them when a sci-fi : programme satisfies other 'wants' of mine. : : What I look for in a 'good' programme, one I want to watch regularly, is a : charismatic lead who has an emotionally rich role that has him navigating : interesting challenges that sometimes embody my own 'issues' but might as : easily be issues that I don't have much direct involvement in. : : I've only seen a few episodes of 7th Heaven because it was only shown here : briefly, but I was happy to watch it when it was on because - as he's shown : to a more substantial degree since in 'Teaching Mrs Tingle' - Barry : Watson's a pretty decent actor and can pull a bit of weight out of a flimsy : script *and* look good. : : 'Once & Again' has been on here in the UK during the autumn, and I've : enjoyed watching that for Billy Campbell and Shane West, as well as the : women actors - it's a thoroughly good emotional drama, in my book. No : sci-fi to be seen. : : My strongest sci-fi enthusiasm has been for Lois & Clark, and like many of : that series' fans, my interest lay largely in what we called the 'B' plots, : the romantic lines between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher - I was one of the : ones who thought them getting married made the series even *better*, : because it tackled new issues in an interesting way. : : First Wave's first season was, I thought, very good indeed, but the second : season - which went the Roswell path, with less 'human interest' and more : 'sci-fi' - has been dismal, and I've entirely lost interest. : : What caught my interest in Roswell, initially, was Jason Behr's glittery : gloom - the way the black clouds parted into ravishing bright light while : his affection for 'Liz' was allowed to blossom. It was the emotional : content I liked, and the sci-fi was just a vehicle for the 'teen angst', : for me. : : That means that my responses to the second season have been *very* : ambivalent. I've enjoyed some of the most recent episodes much more than : the early ones, but there have been moments that seemed to me to be so poor : that they will probably prevent the second series being sold to UK : broadcasters. The weird 'royal' business alone will probably rule it out - : not because we're worried about upsetting any real royals, but because the : issue is so clumsily handled. : : I've found the non-sequiturs, the jittery continuity and the concentration : on 'facts' about granoliths and other such nonsense, tiresome to the last : degree - I want to know what 'Liz' is going to do about being in love with : 'Max', and what 'Maria' is going to do about her feelings for 'Michael'. : For me, at least, the rest of it is just contextual blather for the : characters I've come to care about. : : Cheers, : Colin. : : Dr Colin Roth - Convocation Trust for the Arts - 0114 275 2575 : : : : ---------------------------------------------------------- - ------ : Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. : ---------------------------------------------------------- - ------ : Shop online without a credit card http://www.rocketcash.com RocketCash, a NetZero subsidiary - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 05:43:26 -0600 From: "maimiea" Subject: Re: [roswell] argh! another rerun Exactly. Maimiea said, >Colin? Where have you been? I have really missed your >interesting points of view. That's kind of you! I've been doing a lot more lecturing recently - and there's lots coming over the next few months, too, so I've been concentrating on getting that organised rather than enjoying watching Roswell episodes! Having done my 'Artist as SuperHero' lecture last August, with clips of Lois & Clark, a New Zealand show called The Tribe, and talking about Roswell as well as Fight Club and other things - even a few artists! - I've used up my quota of tv references for a while! Having the great privilege of being able to watch the current series only a week or two after you, I've found myself a bit 'conditioned' by some of the responses that have been offered on the list - for example, I thought the episode in which 'futureMax' gets obliterated was going to be awful, as most people didn't like it, but I reacted entirely different when I actually saw it, and found it one of the best of the season so far. I've been meaning - since before Christmas - to run through the tapes again and write about my reactions to the episodes we've seen so far, but there just hasn't been time yet. I will try soon, though, even at the risk of thoroughly horrifying some members! >I enjoy different shows for different reasons - Roswell has >just been an obsession for me - The complete draw for me was >the Max and Liz relationship - period!!! It was certainly my way in, though I've come to enjoy more than just the relationship since the first catch. >Roswell (the first season) showed how >people formed friendships, fell in love, etc. - I really >don't know where the second season is trying to go Me too - because the announced increase in sci-fi content seems to have produced a piebald horse of a show, with brown blotches where it used to be more consistently coloured. To make a slightly unfair analogy, it feels as though they've put chocolates and salted peanuts in the same bowl, to try and please more different sorts of people - but actually only disappointing more in the process. Having said that, though, my first watching of the series so far has left a few really strong images - the very last scene (I think) of the 1947 episode, for example, where Michael talks to the 'old man' in a way that really penetrates his own important issues, and uses a flame as a visual metaphor for what's being talked about. While Roswell can scale those heights, I'll keep watching, even if it's sometimes hugely frustrating too. Cheers, Colin. Definitely an interesting episode, since it finally shows some signs of 'returning to its roots,' as the following article states (thanks to the PlanetX list): http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2001-01/22/13.00.tv I'm glad the producers [must have] heard some of the cries from the fans regarding character-based development of the show, and how we wanted at least some of that back. Certainly, "To Serve and Protect" shows some evidence of this. Things I liked: - -Return of Grant Sorenson, only because he disappeared from the story so mysteriously; - -Return of the judge, who granted Michael the petition for emancipation (at least, I think this was the same actor.); - -Reminding us that Roswell is a small town, and the characters are from a small town, and the mention of the '285' highway (just as a reminder of "285 South"); - -Return of humans as the bigger enemy than some ill-conceived storyline of alien enemies that we know nothing about; - -Good strong storyline for Valenti; - -Obviously, another new hybrid alien. Things I didn't like: - -The sheriff has "known the Fosters for years", but did not recognize the daughter when she showed up; - -Who was the gunman?? Odd that we cut away from the scene so quickly, with no mention of motive or intent; - -Where was Colin/Alex? I don't think Michael had but a few lines either; - -Weak character establishment, namely introduction of new characters in a soap-operatic fashion. Who's Sean, for instance? No clear reason why he was in the story, or what kind of trouble he is going to be. I didn't see any point in his introduction at this time. I can only guess that the gunman was in some way trying to lure the pod squad into saving the girl, then knocking them off. But why? Is he a 'real' alien hunter? I also hope when the show is in need of ratings, they don't constantly come up with another hybrid alien to deal with. We already have a Tess. There's more, but this is all I have time to post. In any case, FINALLY a new episode! Colin Roth is probably ready to come all the way over here to kick me in the shins since there hasn't been a new episode to send in so long. ;-) - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Visit http://www.xmission.com/~btvs/roswell/ for help and info. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 14:28:57 EST From: DaniLynn27@aol.com Subject: Re: [roswell] To Serve and Protect... << loved the scene with max and the bullets. It looked kinda like matrix. >> Me too. Not only reminded me of "The Matrix" but also a Buffy episode, "Primeval" where she basically did the same thing, blocked bullets with a force field (for lack of a better phrase) And so happy to see Krakow! I loved him on "MSCL" and I even tuned into a rather bad ABC series he had a role on, "Relativity" just to see him. BTW, the guy's real name is Devon Gummersall. So we have a name to call him besides Krakow or Sean :) Really enjoyed last night's episode thanks to our dry spell of reruns. I think it made me appreciate it more! And is it me, or is anyone else really missing the presence of Colin Hanks? I mean, they threw Michael in for a scene or two. I know there are episodes here and there where a character doesn't show up at all, but he's been missing a LOT it seems. (I did miss the opening few miinutes of the show, so if he showed up there, I'll shut up now LOL) Another scene I liked was Kyle trying to see if he had powers and then Tess tricking him with the remote. Made me laugh. I think it's weird that he wasn't included in what was going on with the missing girl and Isabel's "dreams". I thought they pretty much told each other everything when it came to their powers and stuff. ________________________________________________ Get your free BestoftheWeb.com e-mail account! http://www.bestoftheweb.com/ - ----=_72a3fb08ba4161dcc43030b8f342c5d0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" How come Michael was not on the show for more than one scene?
