As most of you know, this bill not only is a slap in the face of Utah wilderness advocates who have worked on this issue since before Enid Waldholtz was in high school, but it is a fundamental attack on the spirit and intent of the original 1964 Wilderness Act. Because of this, we must ensure that this bill does not pass. And because of this, we have many supporters in the House and Senate. So, it is our work to make certain our friends know about the terrible flaws in this bill. With hard work and determination we can defeat this bill during the 104th Congress. Several items of business since we haven't been in contact for a while. 1.--We just heard that the Network magazine, "The Net Rag," has printed an article in their February edition on Utah Wilderness by Dennis Schvejda. You can access "The Net Rag" at the following web site: http://www.infostarbase.com/tnr.html The article can be found in the Environment section, and will remain there for one month. This article is informative and accurate. If you have a chance and/or want more background on the Utah wilderness issue, take a look. In December "The Net Rag" received about 2200 "hits" per day from all over the world. It is certain that thousands of people will read the article about Utah wilderness. The article (and a previous one) asked people to contact Washington in support of the Utah Wilderness cause. 2.--Here's some gossip. Two weeks ago, while hosting a $1,000 per plate fundraising dinner for Sen. Dole in SLC, Sens. Bennet and Hatch were surprised to be greeted at the entrance to the hotel by a feisty crowd of 50 or so folks, comprised of federal workers angry about their repeated furloughs, and wilderness advocates fresh (meaning they drove straight through) from the Moab rendezvous. The street was a WALL of huge 5.7 wild Utah posters. After slipping through, the good senators probably thought they were free of us for the night. Not so: while taking a moment to relieve himself, Sen. Bennett turned to glance at the young man next to him, focusing on the man's 5.7 button. The young man returned his gaze, and without missing a beat he said "So, you gonna drop that hard release language?" No word on Bennett's response. Then a week or so later at a posh Utah Centennial celebration at a hotel in downtown DC, Rep. Hansen was reported to be very unnerved by the sight, here in this crowd of wealthy business types and other Utah celebs, two young folks sporting 5.7 buttons. He left soon there after, so I guess he missed seeing these two get mobbed for more buttons (they gave out a coupe dozen and ran out with people wanting more). He probably also missed Sen. Hatch getting cornered by folks chastising him about the bad bill and how bad it looked for Utah. 3.--Now for the "what-we-do-next" stuff. It's break time in DC, which means Congress members are home where we can make appointments with them. The drill is simple-- call your Representative; find out if they are going to hold "town meetings" or "Meet the Rep. Evenings" or something like that. Get 5.7 wild materials from Tom Price or Liz McCoy (see the addresses at the end of this message) and go to the meeting and "work em over." Try to make an appointment with your Rep. In her/his office as well. Can't over-emphasize the importance of this work. Rep. Hansen has a list of all the folks who planned to vote against him last December and will be working them over. We simply must counter that in order to keep the support in the House we have generated. One more thing-- if you live in a state that is having a presidential primary, and know of a "meet and greet" or campaign speech event, let Tom or Liz know and they will put you in touch with other folks in your district. We can get you overnight really amazing, eye catching 5.7 wild posters. That's all for now... ********************************************************************* This wilderness alert is produced by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) and the Utah Wilderness Coalition (UWC). We mailed postcards to all 2200 Wilderness Warriors in the past few days. Most of you will get these postcards. Will you please notify Tom (cloud@CapAccess.org) or Liz (liz.mccoy@sierraclub.org) of any necessary changes in address? It would also be helpful if you could tell Tom what is the fastest way to reach you on a reliable basis (FAX, telephone or e-mail). These postcards are a little nudge to remind you that *NOW* is the time to make appointments with your Representatives and Senators to talk about Utah Wilderness. Folks, this could be the last time we get to talk to them before a vote in early March, so this is the time to make an appointment! Now, for some information on how to meet you Representative. Remember--your Representative works for you. Meeting with them and presenting your view is really pretty simple. You call their local office, tell the person you speak with you are a constituent who would like 5-10 minutes of the Representative's time to talk about an issue that is important to you, Utah wilderness. If you would like, Liz and Tom can find other people from your town to go with you to the meeting. You can ask Tom or Liz for some brochures and other materials to take with you and leave in your Rep's office. Or, just take your own photos from the last time you were in redrock country to show them. So, you go to the meeting. You dress nicely, because you want them to pay attention to your message, not your fruit-basket hat or tie-dyed T-shirt. Tell them you would like them to support HR 1500, and give them a few reasons why (show them photos of areas left out of HR 1745, talk about what southern Utah redrock land is like, tell them why you support the protection of these lands). Most Reps love photos, because they are easy to understand and often can convey your ideas pretty well. Tell them why HR 1745 is Sooooo bad--the horrible hard-release language, the millions of acres left open to development, the rewriting of the Wilderness Act--pick your favorite indignity, there are so many in this bill. Liz and Tom have *pages* of so-called talking points, so in case you get flustered you have some "go to" notes. Please e-mail/call for em. KEY STUFF: Ask them how they feel about Utah wilderness and the two Utah bills. Ask if they are aware of this controversy, etc. Mention that the Utah wilderness lands are federal lands and a national issue--not just a Utah issue. Tell them why Utah wilderness is important to you and other people in your state (for example, J.P. Lee of Cambridge Mass, called the Utah travel council to find out how many people in his congressional district had called to get info on going to Utah on vacation). Ask your Rep to support HR 1500 and oppose HR 1745. You can also ask your Rep to become a co-sponsor of HR 1500 if they are not already. FINALLY: Thank them for their time, tell them you will keep in touch. That's about it. You've spent about 15 minutes, more or less, talking directly to the person who will soon vote on these bills. Now head out to a coffee shop and do the VERY important follow-up work. Write down what happened, what you told them, what they told you, what questions and concerns they raised, and what commitments they did or didn't make. Then fax, mail, or e-mail your report to Tom and Liz in Washington, so we can add it to our database. WHY THIS MATTERS: These meetings are hands down, far and away the absolute BEST way to influence what congress does. No money, no access, no contributions, nothing is better than face time from a constituent. Please--make a call, make an appointment. WHAT IF YOUR REP DOES NOT HAVE TIME FOR AN OFFICE VISIT: Find out if they are having public events, like a question and answer period at the local library, a dinner and meeting at the local VFW, a town meeting, anything like that. If they are having an event like this, you and some others can go and ask them publicly about where they stand. WE can send you 5.7 buttons to wear to help you stick out in their minds. We also want to emphasize that the same sort of showing up with questions at presidential candidate events could also be very impactual. A BUNCH OF YOU HAVE ALREADY SET UP MEETINGS WITH YOUR REPS. Great! Our goal is to have activists visit every single office in Congress by months end. This is an ambitious goal, but one that we are confident we can reach. Y'all are the best... That's all for now. P.S. You can check out http://www.xmission.com/~suwa/congress/ to help figure out who your representative is, which utah wilderness bills (if any) they have cosponsored, and what the phone and fax numbers of their district office is. These pages are under construction, but they should still be useful. ********************************************************************* This wilderness alert is produced by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) and the Utah Wilderness Coalition (UWC). You are a great bunch of activists. We're getting a ton of e-mail about your willingness to help and go meet with your Congressmen and women during this critical recess period. For those of you who have been out choppin' wood, Congress is on recess right now and they are all back in the home districts, asking what's on the minds of the voters (that's you). Remember: every single member of the House of Representatives is up for re-election in November, so why not make them worry about voting wrong on utah? The best way to help right now is to make a personal appointment with your representative. Please contact Tom or Liz for details. And see last week's alert for a bunch of information. Since so many of you are doing this, please: when you find out when a member is having a public meeting, or a schedule of their office hours, please FAX or call in the information, so we can get others to help out and join you to talk about saving our canyon country. Congress will be voting on the terrible Utah bill, HR 1745 this year, so it's win or loose time for us. Here are a few examples of how you can help out, and how effective your kind of grassroots action can be: (1) Remember in December when we asked you to call Working Assets long distance, and urge them to put Utah as their issue of the month? well, they did, and the response blew their (and our) minds! They reported sending 33,702 letters from subscribers, and 14, 637 calls to senators! That's something like 300 calls and letters per senate office! This number (like the USA today poll last fall) was waaay beyond their usual response. (2) Rep. Peter Blute of Massachusetts signed on to the bad Utah bill, HR1745. He said that the only calls and letters he has gotten from Utah support the delegation's bill, and the best efforts of activists in his district can't change his mind. So, calling all current (and former) Utah residents, please call the office of Rep. Peter Blute. Ask to speak to the environmental aide, Dan Crann. Tell them you are from Utah and that HR1745 is not representative of the wishes of the people of Utah. Tell him you want Rep. Blute to drop his support for HR 1745 and instead sponsor HR1500, America's Redrock Wilderness Act. His number is 202-225-6101. A few hundred phone calls in a day or so might change their mind: we'll keep you posted on their position. BTW- if Rep. Blute drops his support, we'll have every member of the Massachusetts delegation on our side. (3) Hey, live near Grand Junction? Tomorrow night Rep. Scott McInnis will be at the high school at 7:30 answering questions and meeting with the public. Join Greg Trainer and a bunch of boaters from Friends of Westwater to grill him to support 5.7 million acres of wild Utah. Free 5.7 wild buttons/stickers for the first handful of folks to track down Greg at the school. As you know, it's illegal and so forth for us to endorse candidates. So, in the FYI file: Greg reports colorado US Senate Candidate Tom Strickland has put out a position paper in support of HR 1500. (4) Rep Henry Hyde from Illinois is sitting right on the edge of the fence on the Utah wilderness issue. He says some letters from Utah would really help. Drop a short post to the Hon. Henry Hyde 2110 RHOB Washington, DC 20515. Just a couple of sentences in support of HR 1500 will do. (5) And one more thing: we got another co-sponsor for HR 1500! Tom Campbell, (California 15) signed up on friday! That makes a total of 110--an impressive number and growing thanks to your hard work. They are looking for someone to join their staff in a very interesting position in the heart of southern Utah redrock country. Take a look at the following job announcement and see if you may have some interest. The SUWA staff is great to work with, focused on issues but diverse and with broad interests. Might be your kind of job. GRASSROOTS ORGANIZER. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) is seeking a grassroots organizer to staff a new office in St. George, Utah. SUWA has compiled two reports on water management in the Virgin River basin seeking alternatives to dam construction such as through water re-use, re-allocation, and conservation. The role of the grassroots organizer is to educate residents, as well as local, state and federal agencies by building constituencies supporting these alternative approaches to water development. SUWA is a non-profit regional environmental organization dedicated to the protection of southern Utah's wildlands. Salary is $18,000 including benefits. Application deadline is March 15. Yesterday, Jim Hansen (R UT) started in on Robert Redford for his pro-wilderness stance. Redford has been a strong supporter of HR 1500, our bill to protect 5.7 million acres of Utah's redrock wilderness. Hansen, as most of you know, has led the Utah delegation in preparing and supporting the anti-wilderness bull HR 1745. This is the terrible bill that has passed out of committee and was to be voted on last December. It was your hard work in making this an important national issue and in calling and writing members of Congress that made Hansen pull this bill minutes before a vote on the floor. It turns out that Mr. Hansen simply did not have the votes he needed to pass this bill. In fact, by some accounts, Mr. Hinsche (D NY) was ready to bring HR 1500 as a substitute which may have passed. Mr. Hansen stated at the time that his bill needed more time for discussion than was available on the floor, and so he had decided to pull it. It is comical that we now learn from the Salt Lake Tribune that Hansen says he pulled the bill because he was "hospitalized." We also learn that Mr. Hansen says much of the information we have provided on the Utah wildernesss debate is "blatantly untrue." It is interesting that when a bill seems to be going badly, the anti-conservation side generally starts mud-slinging. And Mr. Hansen is a master at this sort of angry, mean-spirited verbage. Redford stated yesterday, "My position on the Utah wilderness bill remains the same. The majority of the people don't want it, yet Rep. Hansen and his colleagues in the Utah delegation continue to push it." Hansen continues to state he has the votes to pass his bill on the House floor and that the Utah delegation's bill will go on to become law. Others doubt this. Senators Hatch (R UT) and Bennett (R UT) have both stated the Utah delegation's bill faces stiff opposition in the Senate and a threatened veto by President Clinton even if it passes in the House. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Saturday February 17, 1996, "The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) and other environmental groups made it a national issue by mobilizing grass-roots supporters and contributors and taking their case to newspaper editorial boards around the country." This means you, folks. Nice work! The kicker is, when Redford was asked to give an interview to CBS about Hansen's position that environmentalists should take the 1.8 million acres and "love it," Redford replied: "Did you give him a chance to speak? Because I don't have to say a whole lot if you did." Mr. Hansen is also angry about the poor reception he has received for his other anti-environment legislation. For example, he is trying to push his National Park Service Reform Act and most of us in the green community are not letting him get away with forming a board to close National Parks. So, here's to our work of bringing Mr. Hansen's (and others) anti-environmental work into the bright light of public scrutiny. We will continue to speak out for Utah's redrock wilderness. We will continue to make our voices heard in support of public lands. We will bring to national attention the terrible provisions of HR 1745 and other legislation. And if we do this work well enough, we will prevail in preserving these wonderful lands as the heritage for all coming generations. We will be coming to you soon with a target list of politicos we want to take our message to. In the mean time, remember to continue to talk to your own Reps and Senators. This is the time for our best efforts... That's all for now... ********************************************************************* This wilderness alert is produced by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) and the Utah Wilderness Coalition (UWC). If you ever needed proof, it's right here on the Utah wilderness issue: Jim Hansen is holding an east coast forest hostage in hopes he can twist the arms of the representatives in those states to vote for his develop-Utah-wilderness bill. In the past couple of days things have been moving fast. Please read the details and then react. Friends, the fight to save canyon country is coming down to the endgame. In the next few weeks we'll need to move hard and fast as Rep. Hansen and his pro-development buddies probe our defenses for weak point. Please, make a few calls, keep the pressure on. If we do this right, we'll keep winning. OK, to the details: The New Jersey and New York delegations have tried unsuccessfully for years to protect a small forest on the border between these two states. This tiny forest, the Sterling Forest, houses the protective watershed for New Jersey, and every politician in both states, as well as the legislatures, support it's protection. Problem, is, any bill in the House to protect this forest has to pass through Rep. Hansen's committee. He is telling members of the New Jersey and New York delegations they will not get the time of day from him until they quit their support for the Utah redrock protection bill, HR 1500 and support his anti-wilderness bill, HR 1745. Read the following piece from Greenwire from a couple of days ago. STERLING FOREST: GOPers MAY HOOK ISSUE TO UT WILDERNESS New Jersey lawmakers "may be forced to support" the Utah wilderness bill sponsored by Rep. Jim Hansen (R-UT), which is strongly opposed by enviros, in order to secure federal funding to buy the Sterling Forest on the New York-New Jersey border. A bill being crafted by House GOPers to help purchase the forest may be attached to other legislation, including a measure to remove four million acres of Utah wilderness from federal protection, said Rep. William Martini (R-NJ). Martini said the New Jersey delegation may have to back the Utah bill to get the necessary support from Western lawmakers: "Frankly, we believe preserving Sterling Forest is such a priority that we would have to look very closely at whatever mechanism can get us there." Two other Sterling Forest bills have stalled in the National Parks, Forests and Lands Subcmte., which Hansen chairs. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance's Cindy Shogun said Hansen is holding the measure hostage to win key votes for his "unfixable" Utah bill (AP/Casper [WY] STAR TRIBUNE, 2/21). So, here's our work. We *must* to tell members of the New Jersey and New York delegations that linking the protection of Utah's spectacular lands to the purchase of a forest in New Jersey/New York cannot be done. This is politics at its worst. This is do or die time folks. We lose these moderate republicans in New Jersey and New York and we loose Utah wilderness. It's that simple. We are asking all of you on our list to phone the following Representatives. Tell them of your support for HR 1500 and that you are happy they have chosen to support this bill. Ask them not to waver in their support of HR 1500. Tell them you are disappointed with Rep. Hansen's attempt to force them to vote for his terrible anti-wilderness bill. Here are the Reps. We want you to contact. Please do so in the next few days. When you have feedback after your conversations, phone or e-mail Tom Price or Liz McCoy. One more thing: as of a couple of hours ago, the 800 numbers for Washington brought to you by the "bad guys" were still active. Those numbers are: 1-800-962-3524 and 1-800-972-3524. First of all, thanks to all of you for your hard work on this issue. Hundreds of phone calls are getting through. And as you read this, SUWA and the UWC have 20 people from across the country in Washington working on this issue. Your Calls are still needed. Please remember to be as positive as possible. Tell the person you talk with about your support for Utah wilderness, and why you support HR 1500. This seems to be important to many of the Reps since Rep Hansen has been passing information that very few people in Utah actually support HR 1500. Rep Hansen seems to be saying his is the moderate bill with the most support in Utah. So, work on countering this information, and do it in a very positive way. 2.--A delegation of Utah county commissioners is in Washington this week. They are lobbying in support of the Utah delegation's anti-wilderness bill. They are carrying the same message Mr. Hansen has been spreading, that HR 1500 has very little support in Utah. We know from so many different ways this is simply false. But our work is cut out for us in countering this false information. At the moment, we are asking for a single action TODAY. We know that the Utah county commissioners have an appointment with a key Rep, Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD), Thursday afternoon. They plan to tell Mr. Gilchrest that HR 1500 has very little support in Utah. Let's get a couple of hundred calls into Mr. Gilchrest's office in the next 24 hours in support of HR 1500 to counter the false claims by those pushing for the anti-wilderness bill. If we do this right, the "Utah doesn't want 5.7 million acres of wilderness" message will simply be put to the lie before the county commissioners are able to deliver it. Mr. Gilchrest is a key person, so please be very polite. Rep Gilchrest's phone number is (202) 225-5311. Or, use the 800 numbers brought to you by the Christian Coalition, 1-800-962-3524 or 1-800-972-3524. 3.--We will be back in touch with you in the next couple of days with an update on the Sterling Forest issue and with our next plan. As always, y'all are the best! That's all for now... ********************************************************************* This wilderness alert is produced by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) and the Utah Wilderness Coalition (UWC).
