From: Pete Ashdown Subject: (utvgg) TRON killed my marriage! Date: 05 Nov 2001 22:01:38 -0700 Well, not really, but the tabloid title should have grabbed your attention so you can read my story. I found a Tron this weekend in the best condition short of new I can imagine. Although the side-art had been stripped off in a moment of carelessness by the previous owner, the rest was immaculate. Sticker on the spinner, overlay looked like new, the shroud and graphics were perfect, monitor bright, and all the lights worked. The stick had been replaced with a NOS stick and even the coin door lacked any damage. However, this guys apartment was tiny. He had five games crammed into his bedroom, which was about 10' x 10'. So it meant a bit of maneuvering needed to be done to get the Tron out, a hand-truck wouldn't fit. So we're carefully rocking the machine out of his bedroom and I hear a *POP*. It sounded like a lightbulb shattering. I gritted my teeth expecting to see the stick broken in half, or the screen caved in, or something unfixable busted forever. Looking around on the floor, I found four identical tiny pieces of metal. When I saw them, I looked at my left hand and knew exactly what had happened. My wedding ring had exploded. My father taught machine manufacturing at the local trade college for most of his life. When I announced my marriage, he made a deal with my fiance and crafted a wedding ring for me out of solid titanium. It was a very cool ring and very tough. I practically never took it off. Titanium is a strong but brittle metal. The pressure of a 300 lb game was too much for it, and it broke apart before bending. The silver lining here is that if that ring hadn't taken the pressure, I would have most definitely had my finger in a cast right now, if not worse. If the ring had not been titanium, it might have pinched my finger off. My father laughed and laughed when I told him the story. My wife views it as a cautionary tale for me to be careful when I'm lugging these crazy things around. I'm just happy to have a wife who loves me enough to put up with my hobbies. That's something stronger than any metal. - To unsubscribe to utvgg, send an email to "majordomo@lists.xmission.com" with "unsubscribe utvgg" in the body of the message. Date: 05 Nov 2001 21:48:04 -0800 Glad to hear that you are ok -- are you going to have your Dad craft another? I prefer taking my ring off when working on games. If I'm doing electrical/monitor work, I don't want it accidentally touching anything and short it or me out. If I'm doing game maneuvering, I don't want it getting caught on something and taking my finger (or finger skin) with it. (As a pre-med student, I saw all sorts of nasties w/ rings, but the one that sticks in my mind is when Neil Armstrong (yes, the astronaut) was jumping out of the back of a pickup truck, his wedding ring caught on something and ended up pulling the entire skin basically off his finger (finger bones were left intact). After seeing a picture of that, I didn't need to live through an experience like that. They were able to reattach the skin, though.) I also always work w/ gloves, saves wear and tear on the hands. I found some gloves a while back at Home Depot (I've since seen them at a lot of other places) that work really well. They are cloth gloves w/ a thick wrinkly (blue) rubber covering. They make grabbing games *a lot* easier, I strongly recommend them. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-utvgg@lists.xmission.com > [mailto:owner-utvgg@lists.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Pete Ashdown > Sent: Monday, November 5, 2001 9:02 PM > To: utvgg@lists.xmission.com > Subject: (utvgg) TRON killed my marriage! > > > Well, not really, but the tabloid title should have grabbed your attention > so you can read my story. Still full of stuff supposedly, but the owner wants to get rid of it all for $10,000. However, I don't know how good the stuff is, or how true the story is, for I heard it from another operator I bought some games from. I had a friend do some calling around at Cedar City and he hit nothing but dead-ends. The trail starts with George the Music Man, who died and left the business to a son, who then liquidated the business to someone else. That someone else left the business and sold the warehouse separate from the operations portion. The warehouse remains to this day. Mike Poulson put an ad in the paper after I put my ad in the paper, and someone in Cedar City called him up. The operator that related it to me said that Mike was frantic that nobody find out about it. Heh, heh, heh, heh. I figure he forfeited secrecy when the sledge hit the Space Lords. - To unsubscribe to utvgg, send an email to "majordomo@lists.xmission.com" with "unsubscribe utvgg" in the body of the message. Start by checking the voltages at the regulators. Ignoring the condition of the board, here are the test points that I use: http://www.classicade.com/amplifonetestpoints.jpg The inputs to the regulators is spec'd at +/-30 volts, but is typically +/- 33-34 volts. Output should be right around +/- 24 volts. If you don't have the input voltage, then you have a problem w/ the +/- 30 volts from the deflection board (check all the jumper wires, remove and replace the original brown resistor-looking things). If you don't have the output, replace the voltage regulator. The original is rated for 1 amp, you can get upgrades that are rated at 1.5 amps (a bit more heavy duty): 7824cv and 7924cv. Mouser carries them. If you have correct output voltages, check the BU406D. Make sure that this is a BU406D (and not something like a BU406) -- these parts are a little harder to find, and some ops replaced them with an incorrect part (that can eventually fry your HVT!) If you have a scope, you can check to make sure that you have square-wave at the base. etc. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-utvgg@lists.xmission.com > [mailto:owner-utvgg@lists.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Jeff Peters > Sent: Sunday, November 11, 2001 10:11 PM > To: utvgg@lists.xmission.com > Subject: (utvgg) Ampliphone color XY HV pcb > > > Anyone locally have a working HV pcb for an Ampliphone color XY > monitor? Building a cabinet that can deal with the "public" (as opposed to just one for your basement) isn't as easy as it looks. Having worked with the crew at Wms/Bally that built them I can say that a lot of experience goes into one that meets all of the demands (including the "loading dock drop").. Also building one that is large (like a gauntlet/trog) is tougher to keep it strong. Luckily Ray Chaika(sp?) was a god and built ours right the first time. After testing sometimes a pile of wood/monitor/boards would be returned for analysis (read "insulting laughter directed at the designer"). They do silk-screening and can print on adhesive backed stock. I don't know how bad they'd hurt you for a one off job. If you are making MAME art that won't be backlit, your best bet is to go to Alphagraphics or similar, find out if they have a RGB (red, green, blue. You may not like CYMK (Cyan,Yellow,Magenta,Black) as they sometimes can't match a color exactly) printer that will print at 1200 dpi and get it printed on a high gloss stock. I printed my MAME CPO and some playing instructions on a 1200 dpi printer and am very happy with it. Date: 12 Nov 2001 11:41:02 -0700 Well, I made some calls and here is what I found: There is a place in West Valley called "WHN printing" that has a drum scanner that can do large format scanning. I explained to Tosh, the sales rep, about arcade collecting and repro'ing side art, CPO's etc. He said a good ballpark figure for 2 sides of 18" X 24" art scanned in at 600 DPI and printed on an "Epson Proof", on glossy paper would be about $120.00. No adhesive backing. And don't confuse the 600 DPI with the 600 DPI you see on your inkjet. 600 DPI on a $20,000 proof printer looks schweet. They can scan up to 12,000 DPI if you want. Yes, 12,000. And the $120 is almost all scanning and pre-press charges. To print 2 copies on the same job should cost you about $20 more. And 8X10 scan is around $65, so that's about what a CPO would cost. Tosh did say he could "work with me" on the pricing, but I am telling you the "un-worked" prices so if it's cheaper, we are all happy. They will give you a very high quality reproduction that you probably couldn't tell from the original. But it will be expensive. Around the prices that WHN quoted. Alphagraphics: I am assuming you downloaded your art from CAGA or somewhere and want a low buck, but pretty good looking printout. For my MAME cocktail, all the art (marquee's, operating instruction's for a couple of games, and the custom CPO) are under glass or Lexan and not backlit. IMHO, it looks pretty good, and I am kinda anal about aesthetics. I did them here at work, but I can't imagine anyone charging more than $30 for a 600-720 dpi printout. You just have them print out all the pictures you want on the same page, the paper comes on a roll. You cut them out yourself. Condition is better than average, although most games need some work (cap kits, power supply fixes, flyback here and there, etc.). Boardset conditions is unknown, not stored very well. I don't know much about the other parts, although I did see complete (NOS) Nintendo kits (like DK, DK Jr, etc.). If there is enough interest and $$, I'll negotiate w/ the op and see what can be set up in a bulk purchase. He is aware of eBay and some eBay prices (last year, when dealing w/ him he wanted $800 for a working Ms. Pac, wouldn't sell them non-working). Please post your interest to the list (mail me privately w/ your $$ interest if you prefer). Date: 13 Nov 2001 19:14:50 -0700 Glad to hear there are still a few warehouses left for us to spelunk in... Although I am currently out of space and trying to downsize, I am always interested a 'warehouse' buy (something about the thrill of discovery, I guess.) Besides, parts are easy to packrat away... Please keep me in mind as the list develops.... jeff ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Tuesday, November 13, 2001 2:34 PM > Ok ladies, I know an op in Southern Utah (not the Cedar City guy) that I've > dealt w/ on several occasions.
