So for now, Laswell and the downtown improvisers are completely fair game to discuss on this list. Discussion may include, but is *not* limited to, the following artists: Bill Laswell, Bill Frisell, Elliott Sharp, Bobby Previte, Liu Sola, Wayne Horvitz, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Nicky Skopelitis, Joey Baron, Last Exit Posse, Painkiller, John Zorn (obviously :), Material, Tetsu Inoue, etc... ** There is a great article on Bill Laswell, and another great article on the Boredoms in the latest issue of Mondo 2000 Magazine. Check it out! ** Also, for all of you who are interested in obtaining a catalog of Knitting Factory artists, the email address is: kf@knittingfactory.com Enjoy! -Matt, zorn-mgr ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From proussel@ichips.intel.com Fri Feb 10 11:54:29 1995 On Fri, 10 Feb 1995 10:19:47 -0500 mpj1@kepler.unh.edu wrote: > > I have a suggestion to make....How would you all feel about opening > this list up to discussion of BILL LASWELL and his projects also? > > I feel that he, along with Zorn, are the leaders of the avant-garde > scene, and therefore Laswell stuff would not be out of place here > on this list...Let the list know what you think, and feel free > to start talking about Laswell.... If you open the list, I guess that it should end up as a: NY DOWNTOWN MUSIC list and it would include not only Zorn and Laswell, but artists like: Elliott Sharp Wayne Horvitz Zeena Parkins Knittin Factory's rooster artists etc Patrice. For one thing, Laswell is not confined to the jazz avant-garde. He's deeply involved in world music, funk, ambient, dub, etc. If we're going to talk about him on the Zorn list, we should probably clarify which of his projects is fair game to discuss. Some people may not want to hear about all these diverse projects. On an ambient tip, Laswell's new album on FAX, "Outer Dark," is a mighty fine example of intelligent ambient with world music influences. And since FAX releases are limited to 1000, better get it while it's hot! -- Mark Turner mturner@netcom.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From boster@email.unc.edu Fri Feb 10 13:05:14 1995 Subject: Re: ZORN DIGEST #21 OK, I guess this is my first attempt at wading into this Zorn morass and I think it's a good entry point: Laswell added to the list-topic is a great idea...Also forwarding the discussion to the various related players to both of these cornerstone-like gentlemen is a good idea (I for one am a huge fan of Bill Frisell and Joey Baron, the Last Exit posse, and all Laswell's world music associates - Bachir Attar's release on CMP is required listening for cultural literacy IMHO.) I've just recently gotten Masada and I'm relatively happy with it, although I probably would have been more so had I not seen that line-up in the fall at Duke. The live power (not even amplified - except stand-up bass amp) of that band is so expressive and rich that the CD can never relate this info. Too bad...does anyone else have it? What is the general feeling about a "Jewish Jazz" concept? How do people feel about it in reference to Ornette Coleman? Lastly, I NEED a copy of some coherent set of rules for COBRA. I've read the "descriptions" of it which have driven me this far, but I actually need some hard rules...I will gladly pay $$$ for both the trouble of sending them as well as the collectibility thereof. I don't intend to try to "rip them off" for any massive commercial gain (although that's a pretty funny idea), I just want to "play" a few rounds as a performance series here in beautiful Chapel Hill (whose cultural tastes far exceed the gigs we get in our area.) Please help me and I will be forever indebted to you... Thanks in advance and I'm happy to be here in Zornland. I know, it is kinda slow, isn't it. Matt - any more thought been given to take it off a digest version and put it under listserv or majordomo? That'd speed things up, methinks.
