(Some digests require this). My name is Glenn, originally from NYC, now residing in New Orleans. Big fan of Zorn, Horvitz, Laswell and so on. Last recording I purchased with JZ is "Sacrifist" by Praxis. Only JZ recording I can't listen to is (Can't remember the title)--plays the music of Ornette Coleman.. [ "Spy vs Spy" is the title. -Matt, zorn-mgr ] Thanks --------------------------------------------------------------------------- From bueno@uhunix.uhcc.Hawaii.Edu Mon Feb 13 14:20:32 1995 Subject: Re: ZORN DIGEST #22 > From proussel@ichips.intel.com Fri Feb 10 11:54:29 1995 > > If you open the list, I guess that it should end up as a: > > NY DOWNTOWN MUSIC list > > and it would include not only Zorn and Laswell, but artists like: > > Elliott Sharp > Wayne Horvitz ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This sounds like a better idea. Have these guys ever played together? Anybody know why Zorn is thanked by him? mahler@netcom.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From hrow@casbah.acns.nwu.edu Mon Feb 13 20:49:47 1995 Subject: Re: ZORN DIGEST #22 Zeena Parkins' "Isabelle" CD on Avant is well worth listening to. Comprising two pieces, "Isabelle" (1993) and "Hup!" (1992), the disc tells two wonderful stories. "Isabelle" is the story of a woman who converts to Islam early in her life, travels to Algiers (?), is brought into a Sufi sect, writes about Muslim society and culture, and dies in a flash flood before she reaches the age of 30. Isabelle wandered alone dressed as a man at the turn of the century, which was uncommon. (All from memory. If you have the liner notes in front of you, correct me.) The second piece, "Hup!" is shorter (about five segments instead of 10) and based on Wonder Woman and other American/European superheroes of the '40s and '50s. While I've not listened to "Hup!" the music in "Isabelle" is wonderful, incorporating Muslim chant and string music from Zeena's family, as well as effects, loops, etc. Yow. -- "Better than a thousand useless words is one single word that gives peace." -- The Dhammapada Heath Row, hrow@casbah.acns.nwu.edu Karma LapElectronic, http://pubweb.acns.nwu.edu/~hrow -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
