Have y'all heard about this? I was talking to a guy who works for Caroline, and he told me they'd be working with Bill Laswell on a new label-project called "Meta". The Meta label will apparently be focused on spoken word projects, although I think there will be music accompanying the words... Projects on the slate include work by Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, and a tribute to Bryon Gysin. Thought some of the folks here would be interested :-) Hope this isn't old news... Also, to whoever it was who raved about the Vandermark Quartet, NRG Ensemble, etc. (did you mention the Flying Luttenbachers?) - do you know if they only play Chicago and surrounding areas? Apparantly pretty progressive for Japanese rap, they sound more like Run DMC in 1986 than like anything contemporary (let alone unusual new) in US or western European rap. First the stupid questions: 1. Knitting Factory Works posted a message on the Usenet saying that they shipped Zorn's "Cobra '92" on March 29. Has anyone seen it in any stores? CDNow! lists 04/18/95 as a release date. 2. Has anyone else translated the kanji on Masada obi (or whatever you call those slips that wrap around the spine of the CDs)? My Japanese teacher roughly translated it as saying, "After buying the three Masada discs, send your name, age, address, and 190 yen in postage to the address listed." That's all I could get out of her before I left for my next class. Who can confirm this? Now for the content: Hawaii isn't as backward as I thought it was. I actually saw the first six Tzadik releases on the Tower Records shelves. Then I saw who distributes the label: Koch International. At least that gives us isolated folk a fighting chance to see "Elegy" in the racks. Any brave soul out there invest their money into any of these discs? Share your thoughts please... On a related note, will Pigpen return to the studio anytime soon? I'm quite eagar to see what Wayne Horvitz comes up with next. "V as in Victim" is a really great CD -- it's a lot harder than the President discs on Elektra, but Horvitz's penchant for hooks is still strong. I was disappointed with "Miss Ann." Somehow, it didn't have the ebb and flow of "Victim," and that cover of "Triggerfingers" deserved another take. ========================================================================= "Gravity is one law no one fucks with." -- Andrew Vachss Greg Bueno bueno@uhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu ========================================================================= ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From xander@netcom.com Thu Apr 13 00:24:19 1995 Subject: New Avant Releases A couple of new Avant discs have just turned up. Has anyone heard them yet? One disc is by Ikue Mori, goes by the title of "Painted Desert," personnel on it is Mori on drum machines, Marc Ribot and someone I'm not familiar with on guitars. The other new disc is by Steve Beresford & His Orchestra, the title is something along the lines of "Signals for Tea Time." His orchestra is essentially Masada, except with a different drummer and everbody sings...
