Gives you a good feel of Fred's personality...which converted me from just liking his music to really respecting him and what he is doing. I saw it again last year, and can say that it holds up well on a second viewing. Definitely check it out! ObZorn: There is brief zorn appearance...nice dark smokey cinematography for his cameo. rizzi Was listening to some Henry Cow yesterday...Boy, were they ahead of their time !!! Glenn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From sibbage@mercury.sfsu.edu Thu Apr 20 14:57:31 1995 Subject: Zorn, etc. I live in San Francisco--so news and product sometimes takes a little longer to get here--but here are my words: I just got the new "Cobra" disk (live at Knitting Factory). I like it a lot--much more like the one Cobra I have witnessed (not much experience, granted, but I was really able to understand the essence of the game) than the earlier "Cobra" disk (Hat Hut)--although it really has nothing to do with Zorn other than his role of devising the game (well, he does actually play in one session, which is interesting). The Cobra I saw proved to be a huge experience and I was wondering what others' experiences were like. It's nice to know that there are others who are patiently (yeah, right!) waiting for Masada 4. Any more news on how to get it or if you've got it how would be fantastic. Masada is the only Zorn group (Cobra doesn't count) that I have seen live so I have a special connection with it. The lineup on the disks is different from what I have seen, however. The first time Masada came to S.F., it was comprised of all S.F. musicians (besides Zorn, of course): Ben Goldberg (clarinets), Trevor Dunn (bass), and Kenny Wollenson (drums). The second time Masada was in S.F., Goldberg was replaced with Douglass (from the album). I have no preference between the different lineups--they all have their unique gems--but I was wondering if anyone did, or if anyone has seen other lineups of Masada. I just heard that Ruins has two CDs coming out on Zorn's NY-based label (one of them with Derek Bailey(!)). They were supposed to be out late last year but I have heard and seen nothing. Anyone? My lover and I were watching an MTV unplugged show of Hole the other night and the three guest musicians were Ralph Carney, Zeena Parkins, and a cellist whose name escapes me right now (it might be Eric Freilander?). That cracked me up. The duo Zorn-Eye has just been recorded (in NYC); don't know yet if it will be issued on Avant or Tzadik. BTW, this duo is currently touring... in China!
