I was putzing around in my radio station when I found this old CD titled "John Zorn Radio Hour." Now, I know that I'm not allowed to steal this little gem, but I've listened to most of it already. It was made during the recording of "Torture Garden" and contains some really awesome different versions of tunes that cropped up in the final vinyl. Plus, tracks from Pharoah Sanders, Hazel Adkins, Napalm Death, Brian Wilson, Morricone, Huesker Due (sorry, no umlauts on this computer) and other influences. Has anyone else heard of this thing before, and am I supposed to treasure this more than I am already doing? It's cool to hear the man's voice, y'know? Plus, I finally figured out how we got this odd cart for airplay, with a Naked City tune and the repeated "I'm John Zorn" vocal. It's a sample from him talking. Neat-o. Say, for those of you interested, anyone wanna....uh.....trade? No, I won't steal this thing, trust me, it's going into the main library, but what about some copies floating around? Seriously, I'll send if I can receive. I'm interested in some of the more "calm" moments of Zorn's work at the moment, don't know why, but email me at mwittman@delphi.umd.edu and we can work out a deal, I suppose. Seriously, I would like to share this moment of education (it's quite enlightening to hear him develop his philosophy), and for a change, it's something that I listen to that I've never read about in the digest. So, email me, and let's see what we can do. Thanks for listening. I just picked up the first Masada CD, and think its great, especially the Coleman influences. I was actually a bit surprised how 'accessable' it was. What I'm wondering is how the other two Masada CDs compare. Are they better/worse?; same mix of styles or other do they have other influences?; more or less adventurous?; same mix of fast/slow numbers? How about this 'free' fourth CD you can get. Has anyone mailed in for it and received it? I see it only has 3 tracks. Thanks for any opinions. -- Brian Lindsay - Opinions above are my own ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From gastarit@comm.net Wed May 3 09:02:04 1995 Subject: Re: could someone advise me of the new "Ruins" disk ? Is this a new Painkiller effort ? I thought "execution ground" was new ? I'll be seeing them here in >San Fran this Friday (5/5). I'm quite excited. Also, according to the Wow, I also just heard that Zorn was going to be in Chapel Hill, NC on 5/7, so he must be really busy... does anyone have a list of tour dates, if he is actually on tour and not just doing a couple isolated gigs? I just joined this list, so I apologise if this is a topic that was already adressed recently... steev ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From scofielc@elwha.evergreen.edu Wed May 3 17:35:20 1995 Subject: Re: ZORN DIGEST #50 Hey...just want to say that tomorrow (5/4) I will be able to see Painkiller in Seattle! Actually, this will be my first ever live Zorn experience, and B. Laswell experience. Needless to say, I'm incredibly stoked. I even had a dream about seeing them 2 weeks ago! Anyways, i guess Laswell will start with an ambient set, then Zorn will do some solo craziness, and then M. Harris will finally join to slaughter the entire audience. (i.e. San Fran - 5th, Boston - 10th) If they are touring does anyone have a list of dates or know if there is a Chicago date (& location)? I e-mailed Subharmonic & I am waiting to hear back from them, but I just wondered if anyone out there could get the info to me faster. I definitely don't want to miss the best show of the decade . . . . Thanks, Patrick ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
