Laswell often borrows names and phrases from books and especially book titles (and also occasionally from other CDs) that he likes. They often have little connection to the book and, as far as I can tell, are intended to stand on their own. As an example, there was a Laswell release on the Fax label earlier this year called _Outer Dark_. Now the book _Outer Dark_ (by Cormac McCarthy) is one of the most incredible pieces of work I have ever read, but the CD doesn't have any connection to the book, although another CD on Fax, by Laswell and Namlook, called _Outland_ might fit the _Outer Dark_ title better. So I wouldn't assume that the book titles and the CD titles are related. And if you can look at the censored-in-the-US Earache Painkiller covers for more than five seconds (available at my web site), I can highly recommend _Outer Dark_ the book. Philip K. Dick wrote a novel called _FLow My Tears the Policeman Said_. I must admit being ignorant to essentially all of Laswell's Subharmonic work. I do have Material's _Hallucination Engine_ and like it quite (although, I still generally prefer _Live in Japan_), would I then like this new VALIS excursion? Chances are I"ll prolly have to pick it up anyhow, but since I'll have to order it.... And, lastly, no I haven't heard of VALIS by Tod Machover. Who is he? What is it? worth searching out? -nick ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From pmcarey@students.wisc.edu Sat Jul 15 05:19:02 1995 Subject: Execution Ground (Japanese import) I just recently received my copy of the Painkiller "Execution Ground" triple CD from Japan. Since I remember that quite a few people were asking for info on this I thought I'd spread the word: Painkiller - "Execution Ground" 3CD on Toy's Factory (TFCK-88731~3) Disc 1 & 2 are exactly like the Subharmonic 2CD & the third disk is "Live in Osaka". It is 55:21 minutes long and contains the following 5 tracks: 1 - GANDHAMADANA 13:00 2 - VAIDURYA 9:00 3 - SATAPITAKA 11:00 4 - BODKYITHANGGA 13:00 5 - (John & Eye duo encore) BLACK BILE/YELLOW BILE/BLUE BILE/CRIMSON BILE/IVORY BILE (1:45) (0:58) (2:40) (1:46) (1:26) Yamatsuka Eye guests on vocals on Tracks 4 & 5. The sound quality is great & the music is, of course, excellent . . . obviously much like the material they played on their recent U.S. dates. Recorded in November of 1994 by Oz Fritz. The artwork on the sleeves and inserts is brilliant & continues in the vein of the last three Painkiller outings. And now, most importantly, where to obtain this gem: I ordered mine directly from Japan Overseas in Osaka for $52. ($42 + $10 to ship the huge thing) They are very quick to deliver. I usually have my orders in less than two weeks from when I mail them in. I also make sure to call & reserve the items I want beforehand. They will take either Japanese Yen or U.S. Dollars. There was also a Raymond Scott album on Stash a couple of years back. It was mainly airchecks etc i believe and actually came out before the Columbia album but got swamped by the major label press. 2. Rhino has just released a double-CD anthology covering Ennio Morricone's career that i think would interest most of you.
