The day after you order The Seduction of Claude Debussy online at Tower, you get an E-mail from Amplified giving you a web page URL and an "entry code" to order the make your own CD. I agree that it's not inherently obvious, but it's not a scam either. Moving tracks up and down gets iffy if you dont do a shift-reload after changing each pick. Picking 10 (of 12) was somewhat hard, and then, the order at which to put them. ex: you dont want beat boxes consecutively after each other. Nor do you want the (sorry : i know they're rare, i'm a completist too, but...) boring 'nothing but a drum loop' 2 minute thingies consecutively after each other. We'll see once the disc actually arrives, it's hard to be objective about a 30 second clip, one that's in real audio at that. I left off beat box (diversion) 4 min cause i have the moments in love cd single and it's on there ( i think i got that right) and the a time to clear'whos listening' thingie cause i already put that on one of my early comps sampled from the close 7" (and cigar picturedisk). 'structure' is basically the 'chow chow che chow' that was used in it, so i made it close out the disc. CRAP i just realized I made an error, I meant to pick "a time to clear (up)" instead of "whos listening". 1 Beat Box (One Made Earlier) 2:27 - ----- 2 Who's Afraid (Of Scale) 4:38 - ----- 3 Resonance 2:14 - ----- 4 A Time to Hear (Who's Listening) 3:34 - ----- 5 Beat Box (Diverted) 8:12 6 Memory Loss 1:27 7 Closer (To The Edit) 6:23 8 Resin 3:20 9 The Subject Has Moved Left 1:46 10 Structure 1:14 Total: $ 11.24 # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info ztt" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email ztt@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 22:46:32 -0500 From: Dave Cowen Subject: Re: (ztt) what tracks did you pick? Actually, that's exactly the way I ordered them! If I'm wont to listen to Beat Box, chances are I'll, well, listen to lots of Beat Box in a row. If I'm wont to listen to creepy short loop tracks, I'll likely listen to those all at once. I'll end up ripping 'em all to carry around in my Rio anyway, so it doesn't really matter. To each his own. I left of A Time to Hear (Who's Listening) because I already own it on multiple issues (and don't really care for it that much), and Structure, because it sounded about a thousand times stupider than the other tracks. It was also the shortest. I'm sorry, but I wasn't going to pay Universal $1.25 for a freakin' bird squawking for 74 seconds! Now the question is, which title and cover art did you choose? I chose bashful, as it made the most sense: it used mask promo art (always, historically, a good thing), the title made sense (these were, of course, titles which Art of Noise have been "bashful" about letting out into the world), and that art and title seem most appropriate for a Daft companion. So Lazlo, how do you handle a discography entry for such a malleable beast? ;) Oh well, next week should be fun with 3 new AoN silver platters and the new Gentle People CD being delivered... Another one to add to the growing pile of negative reviews. The only complimentary things I ever read about the album were from those articles in which the journalist was obliged to get a brown nose from either Paul or Trevor (if you do not know what this means, please mail me privately and not the list). As for plagiarising the article, I am deeply sorry but it is from yesterday's paper and no longer on the main server now. If I am offending anyone's principles, please accept my apologies. The heart fair sinks at the sight of an album with such a concept-heavy handle, and the contents do little to dispel this unease. Seeking to draw parallels between Debussy's musical innovations at the turn of the last century and, yes, Art of Noise's on the eve of the next, the group rope in John Hurt as an absurdly portentous narrator, while Trevor Horn labours prolifically but ineffectually at the studio controls. The pianist Anne Dudley proves a diligent Debussian pasticheur, while the liner notes, by pop's original spin doctor Paul Morley, are an unintentional treat. Breathtakingly pretentious, but you are tempted to indulge them, if only for the pleasure of hearing the rapper Rakim come up with words that rhyme with Baudelaire.
