I made an audio copy on a MAXWELL CD at the end of May. And over the week-end, when I wanted to listen to it, my CD player did not recognized it at all. A friend of mine told me that MAXELL has the worst CDs to make audio copies. Supposedly, VERBATIM also give suboptimal quality. He did not have any problems with other brands of CDs so far. Did anyone on the list find that other brands of CDs also make poor quality audio copies? Or, is there a brand known for its superior quality of audio copies? Thanks, Maggie PS. Finally emailed amplified.com for help and they sent me a password and instructions. I just told them the story - didn't even give them an order number, but they responded promptly. I just received the CD today. In CD-Now's defence, I did get an email from them a few days ago (several days after I had already ordered the CD using the password amplified.com provided), saying that someone would be contacting me. Also, I did change my email address since last ordering form CD-Now, so they might have sent the password to the old address. But this is more info than you need, just contact amplified.com! I'd add to the Phantom Menace and TSoCD list both Eyes Wide Shut (first Kubrick film in, what, 14 years?) and Futurama (first new Matt Groening show since the Simpsons in 1990). I was seven when Star Wars came out and it changed my perspective on damn near everything, influenced my tastes in not only movies, but books, music, design, etc. Art of Noise in 1983 was a similar experience and continues to influence and inform my musical taste to this day. I beg to differ, however, with your reactions. Both Phantom Menace and TSoCD exceeded my incredibly high expectations; I'm up to eight viewings of Phantom Menace and TSoCD remains in heavy rotation. Neither was a "slow burn," either; I was giddy at first blush on both and my appreciation and admiration only grows with each viewing of Phantom Menace and each listen of TSoCD. Like you, though, I can't wait for more. We all know the long-range plan for continued Star Wars prequels, but I'm wondering whether anyone's heard anything more about the "alternate" versions of TSoCD planned ("The Reduction of Claude Debussy," "The Production of Claude Debussy," "The Abduction of Claude Debussy," etc.). When I was eight or nine, I saw a movie that forever changed my perspective on science fiction films and computer-assisted art. The craftsman who created this movie made a few more, which while handsome, were nowhere near as impressive. Then there was silence for over a decade. When I was thirteen or fourteen, I bought an album (and a gazillion 12" singles) that forever changed my perspective on electronic music and further enhanced my appreciation for computer-assisted art. The craftspeople who created this album made a few more, which while intriguing, were nowhere near as impressive. Then there was silence for almost a decade. When I was thirty, that moviemaker rose from the dead to create an incredibly anticipated "masterpiece", making use of state of the art computer technology. Unfortunately, without plot, and an almost overwhelming CG presence causing a cartoon-like atmosphere of unreality, the anticipation far outstripped the experience. Not that I can't say I'm chomping at the bit for more. When I was thirty, those musicians rose from the dead to create an incredibly anticipated Work Of Art, making use of state of the Art computer technology. However, the attempt at fusion of classical and drum 'n bass and jazz (trip-flop?) can't quite hold a tune, and the anticipation outstripped the experience. Not that I can't say that in the event that Art of Noise return to the One True Manifesto ("And so modern music goes round in this small circle, struggling in vain to create new ranges of tones. This limited circle of pure sounds must be broken, and the infinite variety of 'noise-sound' conquered... the art of noise must not limit itself to imitative reproduction") I wouldn't be chomping at the bit to partake of their pleasures. Redemption is around the corner. Present me with Noise, the effort to translate the unexpected beauty in the sound of reality around us into melody through technology, not a whole lot of d'nb loops over pretty strings (can [or should] anyone say elevator Noise?). Present me with THE TIMBRE OF MATHEMATICS, and THE RHYTHM OF MACHINES. Present me with THE NONTRADITIONAL, aka THE FUTURIST. Should the best part of the album really be sweet, filtered interjections from John Hurt? The skill is not in doubt. The production values are still high.
