It sounds very stripped down compared to the original (how could it not?) but doesn't have the guts to be the full-on "unplugged" take on the material that would have made it really stand out. His vocal sounds completely unsweetened in the mix, too, which isn't necessarily a bad thing in and of itself but it's kind of distracting here. Ian Ferrell replies: When I was over in England last month, there were two CD singles for Holly's remake of Power of Love. I bought both and to be honest, didn't really enjoy them at all. Guess I'm one of those slackers who was bamboozled by Trevor Horn's luxurious mixing techniques, but Holly's versions sound very thin and the tempo is not like the original Frankie version in places, which is very jarring after 15 years of listening to the original mixes. If the discs are not in the discography, I can forward the track information to the list: I'm sitting here looking at the CDs as I type. ian # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info ztt" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email ztt@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2000 20:08:07 +0100 From: "Cobra Bora" Subject: AW: (ztt) Holly CDS 1999 > I understand the album has been out for a while, anyone pick it up yet? Yes, I've just received my copy from CDZone. I think it's quite pleasant, there's some very nice pop tracks on it. Even though it is totally self-produced at home in Hollys house, the sound quality is very good (but of course nothing like FGTH). All in all it sounds very much like Holly's other two albums. A bit old fashioned maybe, but definitely worth listening. If you're interested: CDZone has the album as well as both Power Of Love CD singles and also the Disco Heaven CD single and 12". http://www.cdzone.co.uk/ They also offer a FGTH CD calles 'Ultra Rare Trax'. I assume this is from the same series as already available for a number of other artists like Pet Shop Boys, KLF, The Orb... I must say this is a fantastic album, and I recommend it to anyone who likes dancepop. It may, as said, be a bit old fashioned, if you by old fashioned mean that the album includes actual songs that are very well constructed. I find the style reminiscent of '80s Pet Shop Boys, but with a '90s dance sound. It is much better than Holly's earlier albums, and "Hope" was my favourite track of last year. The only weaker track on the album is "The Power of Love". The album version sounds almost like a replica of the FGTH version. By the way, the single was no. 56 on the UK singles chart for two weeks during Christmas. His name is Jordan. Well the ZTT thing didn't happen and he's now signed to Deconstruction. He's recorded a few tracks and has done some producing. I finally got to hear a demo CD the other day. It's a bit garage-ish, not really my cup of tea. But he's a handsome chap with a good voice, so I'm sure you'll be seeing him on Top Of The Pops before too long :-) TTFN Mark # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info ztt" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email ztt@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2000 20:08:19 +0100 From: "Mausi" Subject: (ztt) Baroque Flute Concerts Hi there, I've just seen that CDZone are offering a CD by 808 State called, erm, Baroque Flute Concerts. I thought the game was pretty good. Actually one could argue it was the first animated-walk-through adventure (years before Maniac Mansion). Well they did, sort of: Buy the japanese 'seduction' and the bonus track "dreaming in colour: Green" is basically that. paul distorted and mumbling and saying 'something ...is....missing' during the song. the cd is mastered very loudly, and is the same as the us in track times and layout, except the 2 bonus tracks "roni size metaforce" and "dreaming in colour: colour green brothers in rhythm via art of noise" are placed before the last track "out of this world". the cover is slightly different too. i also got a japanese 'fon mixes' with 3 bonus tracks "a nation rejects" (yeah! the studio original version finally on cd), "dan dare (edited)". i dont see how or where this was edited. and "art of love"(?) not sure if i Have that title right, it was one of those youth-injected mega-mixes things from that 'ambient' era.
